Each room in home reflects different mood

By CLAIRE ORTALDA Staff Writer the times/guide visits . . . bill and sharon kress. For the last month, Sharon and Bill Kress have been tacking up wallcovering, selecting carpet, making curtains and moving furniture. They have hurried to decorate their new Southland Pines home in Perrine before domestic duties of a different variety claim their attention. Sharon and Bill are expecting their first child within the week. Combining a common sense awareness of their own style of living and dramatic color schemes, the young couple have established a different mood in each room of their modern, three bedroom home. Simplicity is elegance, professional decorators say, and Sharon's tightly controlled use of color and delicate contrast of contemporary and traditional fabrics combine to make the Kress's living room both elegant and airy. Heavy black velvet draperies and white sheer curtains adorn the large window immediately opposite the foyer. Rough-textured black and white checkered couches complement the intricate modern design of the plush carpeting. Sharon chose the carpeting to match the couches and velvet curtains which she imported the from the couple's last home in Sacramento, Calif. "In our California home, we had a black and white living room and I decided to keep the same colors here," Sharon said. In that home, a fireplace was the focal point of their living room decorating, with various art works and souvenirs from Bill's travels as an Air Force captain displayed on the mantel. Their new home does not have a fireplace, so they made the living room windows serve as the focal point. A free-standing white enamel shelf system placed in front of the window displays their art objects again a combination of the traditional and the contemporary. In contrast to the formal living and dining rooms, the modern kitchen and adjacent den provide a mood of relaxed informality. "This is where we spend most of our time," Sharon said. The kitchen boasts lots of working space with butcher block formica counters and a matching butcher block tables with two chairs, where Sharon and Bill share most of their meals when not entertaining company. The cozy gold and brown den was decorated with an idea of relaxed evenings at home, complete with television set and card table for bridge games. A sliding glass door opens off the den onto a glass-enclosed Florida room. Down the hall to the bedroom wing, Sharon changed her decorating mood again, opting for subdued floral prints in soft browns, golds, greens and yellows. The master bathroom continues the earth tone color scheme with unusual tattersall plaid beige and brown carpet. The wallpaper is a rust brown design with jungle animals, and tan towels match the wallpaper. "This is mainly Bill's bathroom so I made it more masculine," Sharon explained. Sharon's efforts to brighten her new baby's homecoming are evident in the cheerful color scheme she choose for the See next page
