Hand made items accent couple's living room decor

Matching bedspread and draperies are made from a tasteful, subdued floral print, done in hues of soft brown, gold, green and yellow. Plush wall-to-wall carpeting is there to greet feet when getting out of bed in the morning. From Page 12 newcomer's bedroom. She and Bill stapled sheets patterned in pink, blue and yellow squares on the wall behind the white crib. Sharon made the crib quilt, curtains and a stuffed animal pillow out of matching fabric. Scattered throughout the house are a number of handmade decorating accessories which friends, relatives and Sharon herself have made. Crewel pillows in gold tones, embroidered by Bill's mother, rest atop a wooden chest in the guest room. Bill's mother also needlepointed a black and white picture of Laurel and Hardy wihich Sharon placed in the living room. A chess set in the living room represents the combined efforts of Sharon and her mother-in-law. A surprise gift for Bill, it involved a lot of work and blisters, Sharon remembers. She made the two-foot high stand out of wood and marble type formica tiles. The playing surface alternates two-inch square pieces of marble and wood to make the chess board. Sharon laboriously cut the tile pieces by hand with an Exacto knife. Bill's mother used a method called clear casting to make the playing pieces. A clear plastic is poured into molds, then each piece is antiqued and painted by hand after it hardens. Sharon has since learned the art of clear casting herself and the white opaque candle sticks on the dining room table are proof of her recently acquired expertise. Sharon and Bill say their next project is the back yard and patio area. But that will have to wait until the new member of the Kress family is firmly established in their new home.
