Art appreciation leads to arrests

Having an appreciation of fine art and buying stolen paintings to adorn the walls of your own home are two different things, as three adults and a juvenile have come to realize. The four were arrested for the theft and the receiving of six paintings from the corridors of Larkin General Hospital in South Miami after a clerk in the hospital's gift shop noticed the paintings were missing. The four worked either for the hospital or a cleaning company which services the hospital, according to South Miami police detective Orlando Huguet, whose investigation into the thefts resulted in the recovery of all but one of the paintings and the subsequent arrests. Three of the four pointed out paintings they liked to Don Edward Simone, 21, a former employee of the cleaning company, U.S. Service Industries, who allegedly stole the paintings and sold them at a fraction of their worth to the others. Simone is charged with five counts of grand larceny and one count of petty larceny, while Lynda Smith, 22, and Essie Mobley, 28, are each charged with receiving stolen property. After another employe of the cleaning company said that he saw Simone take the paintings, Simone confessed to the thefts and implicated the others. Lynda Smith allegedly bought three of the paintings valued at $440 for $70 and Essie Mobley reportedly bought two valued at $250 for $25. The other painting, valued at $50, was bought for an undisclosed amount and later destroyed by the juvenile.

Two women have purses snatched

There were two purse snatchings in the same South Dade area in a two-day period this week. According to police, Fortunata Su, 57, was walking in a lot at SW 84th Avenue and 24th Street Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 8:10 p.m., when two men zoomed by in a car and grabbed her purse and knocked her down. The next morning, at 11:40 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, 29-year-old Diane Thorpe was walking from her car to Walgreens at 8550 SW 24th St., when a man in a white Ford ran her down, snatched her handbag and sped off. Ms. Thorpe was treated for cuts and bruises at a local hospital and released. Two McDonalds fast-food restaurants in South Dade were robbed Sunday night, Sept. 19. According to police, two men, one of them armed with a handgun and the other with a shotgun, burst into the McDonalds at 18395 S. Dixie Hwy. at 10 p.m. While one of the men held up employe Debbie Moore, 19, the other forced 24-year-old Walter Laseter, a customer, to give up his wallet. Thirty-five minutes later, the McDonalds at 20975 S. Dixie Hwy. was robbed. Police said that a single man brandishing a handgun forced employe Daniel Biggs, 28, and three fellow employes, to put all the money in a paper bag. Police have no suspects in the hold-ups.
