Bus driver

From Page 1 drives for South Miami High and Seminole Elementary. She said that figures compiled by the Dade County Transportation Department indicate that since the first of this year, it has cost taxpayers $18,000 to pay for vandalism to school bus seats alone. "These kids use anything from knives to razor blades to pencils to slash the seats," she said. "I've been through rocks, eggs, smoke bombs, red ants, shaving cream, boa constrictors and spray paint. "We are human beings — mothers mostly — and we demand respect," Loretta Spagnoli, a 12-year driver, interjected. "It seems that the worst child on the bus is from a broken home — the parents have been divorced and remarried, and the kid takes it out on us." Nancy Pomenizo, a relatively new driver who drives for Glades Junior, Coral Park Senior and Royal Green Elementary, said her Glades children nearly caused her to have a wreck last year. "I was driving from the school to Kendall Lakes and the same 10 to 11 kids who always misbehaved started climbing over the seats, hanging out the window and throwing things at cars," she said. "I have had written them up before to school officials to no avail. "This day, they were really raising hell and I was just fed up with it." Ms. Pomenizo said she had to pull off the road, but the pavement was slippery and the shoulder was soft. The bus barely made it to a stop in one piece. All in all, the drivers complained, it's a senseless "Catch-22" situation. They're damned if they do anything, and damned if they don't. They pointed out, however, that two assistant principals have been outstanding in their cooperation with the drivers: Richard Herrick and Bruce Waizen, both of McMillian Junior High. If there were other school officials like them, the drivers, said, the problems could be alleviated.
