From Page 14 his spare time. And a spare time is not easy to come by when you are executive director of International Police, but for Gerds, carpenter work is a labor of love. How did he acquire his skills? "My grandfather was a contractor," he said. "And I worked right along side of him ever since I was 10, my son Richard's age." Gerds said his son and his wife, Helen, think he is a little crazy because of his construction plans, but they are happy to let him do whatever he wants. They even help out on occasion. When Gerds added the second story roof, the family hoisted the heavy wooden trusses up to the top of the house by themselves. Every house has to pass building inspection standards, but Gerd's said his home has never had any trouble. "One inspector told me that if there was a hurricane, this was where he was coming. I just wanted it really good and sturdy." Gerds estimated that he has added about $120,000 to the value of his home, but figures it cost him about half that by doing the labor himself. Gerds had an unusually shaped lot with which to work. Since the house is built on the curve of a street, the front of the property is only 86 feet across, but the back is 236 feet. But Gerds finds its shape an inspiration and has a lot of plans for more improvements. Why does he keep building when his family of three does not really need the space? Gerds doesn't really have an answer. "Just wanted a change," he shrugged.
