Biltmore site of golf clinic
Don Hart, director of the Coral Gables Parks and Recreation Department, said the second series of 1976 fall golf clinics at the Biltmore course are scheduled for Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28. The clinics are open for boys and girls ages eight through 15 and will be held at the Biltmore driving range from 4 to 5 p.m., on the dates listed, with instruction by PGA and LPGA professionals. The public is invited to participate with a registration fee of $10 required, Hart said. Further information is available at the Biltmore Pro Shop or the Coral Gables Youth Center, 400 Anastasia Ave.
Junior keglers gave good show
sports roundup The Edna Porter Memorial bowling tournament, which was held in memory of Bird Bowl's junior director who passed away May 16, proved to be a very exciting match-up of some of Dade Counties best juniors. A dedication of a plaque from all of Bird Bowl's coaches was presented to Gordon Porter in memory of his wife, Edna. The competition started with all the juniors and seniors rolling a four game qualifing block, with the top eight scores advancing into an elimations round. Junior Tournament Director Gerard Oneto said, "Once these bowlers get through the first round of eliminations, they all become more serious," and that they did. In the semi-finals, junior Sheri Southhall beat Katie Cooper 147-110 and Sue Podel downed Angela Cimaglia 170-144; junior Joey Vavra bested Ed Jones 180-178 and Robert Diehl defeated Eddie Rufo 173-156; senior Leah Arvidson beat Francie Siedman 194-114 and Cindy Beasley knocked off Renee Martin 165-151; senior Mike Balicki roppled Bill Gordon 207-159 and Mark Martin defeated Steve Mugar 215-154. The winners advanced into the finals and when it was all over the champions were junior Sheri Southhall, winning impressively 162-136; junior Joey Vavra just edging out 166-165; senior Cindy Beasley winning in the final frame 192-179; and Mark Martin scoring his victory in the final frames 184-176. The bantams entered the scene on Sunday and even these little bowlers kept onlookers on the edge of their seats. They only rolled three games and the final outcome showed first place honors going to Paulette Shadle and Mike Wesley, second place going to Gloria Ramos and Neil Deutsch and third place to Lisa Ehrlich and James Lovely.
