More than 100 artists have entered SM show

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer The color, mood and brilliance of artistry from exhibitors will captivate the fifth annual South Miami Chamber of Commerce sponsored art show Nov. 5, 6 and 7. "We're making several changes this year that will assure us of having a vastly upgraded show," promised the chamber's executive secretary, Mrs. Rhoda Protko. "For the first time, there will be no crafts in the show," she added, "and also for the first time, this will be a juried show, meaning that each artist must submit three slides of his work, which will be approved or rejected by a panel." In addition, artists will be more evenly spaced on Red Road and Sunset Drive where the show annually draws throngs of viewers, art connoisseurs and strollers over the three-day period. In previous years, the show had been heavy on crafts, which led the powerful Red-Sunset Merchants Association earlier this year to call for changes in the show. "The chamber and the Merchants had several meetings where differences over the show were ironed out," said Mrs. Protko, "with the result being an art show of the highest quality work." Merchants had complained of artists parking their vehicles at curbside adjacent to their works and of blocking the sidewalks and the entrances to stores on Sunset Drive and Red Road. "But we'll have more marshalls this year to correct all of this," said the chamber secretary. With the dropping of crafts from the show, there will be fewer artists this year. But more than doubled increase in the $1,500 last year to some $3,400 this year is drawing local as well as out-of-town artists whose works range from oil paintings and water colors to photography and sculpture. "We have already accepted about 125 artists into the show," Mrs. Protko pointed out, "and there may be more." For those artists whose forte is craftworks, which is being dropped from this year's show, the chamber is considering a craft only show, which probably will be held in Dante Fascell Park on Red Road, sometime next spring.

Biltmore public hearing at city hall Tuesday

Several Coral Gables residents and "Save the Biltmore" advocates are getting their ammunition ready for a public hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 3 p.m. in the Coral Gables City Commission Chambers. The Coral Gables City Commission voted last month to bring the issue of the restoration of the Biltmore to the people of the city and subsequently scheduled a public hearing. Among those planning to be there is W.L. Philbrick, board chairman of Coral Gables Retired Persons, Inc., who believes the best use of the building would be as housing for retired persons with fixed incomes. Because of the high cost of upgrading the Biltmore' city commissioners though best to let the citizenry make the decision.
