Kendall townhouse lends itself well to decor ideas

By DOROTHY STEIN Correspondent Most people, when unable to find exactly the piece of furniture they want for a particular spot, either settle for the least objectionable, or manage to do without. Irene and Larry Lehman had a third alternative. Dissatisfied with the local selection of sofa-beds, they decided to go into the business themselves. It took another year-and-a-half to find someone to manufacture them, but now Larry is co-partner of Richard Scott Furniture, Inc., (named for their two sons, "because they brought us luck. . ."), which now custom makes "almost anything upholstered" for the trade. The Lehmans' California-style townhouse in Kendalltown is the perfect showcase for Larry's furniture and Irene's taste. The soaring double-volume living room gives dramactic impact to the sleep, modern decor, and the plank-and-beam cealings compliment their lavish use of natural wood throughout. (When Irene had completed her townhouse, a neighbor was so impressed that she asked Irene to decorate her home, thus becoming Irene's first client in her new career as professional interior designer.) The Lehmans' disdain for the ordinary is evident from the first glimpse of the house. Even the mailbox of the custom-built A-frame-house looks as though it were architecturally designed. A wooden path winds past a smiling Polynesian god through the exotic "jungle" that once was their driveway and undisturbed front yard. Inside, large glossy white Cuban tiles on the floor give the entrance hallway, living room and dining area a tropical look, and set off the chocolate brown walls and the brown-and-white furniture. A narrow wall running the full two stories is wall-papered to match the fabric of the Parsons table, ottomans, dining room chairs and throw pillows — constituting practically the only use of pattern found in the entire house. Irene, who says she has "never been a pattern person," perfers experimenting with simple color schemes. The recent completed master bedroom off the dining area is a stunning monochromatic study — walls, carpet and fabric are all beige, accessories are natural woods, macreme and rattan. The bed and seating area are covered in beige channel-quilted velvet, resting on carpeted platforms, some of which open for storeage. Alternating stripes of wood and mirror cover the long wall, meeting at a 45 degree angle. See next page

The Lehman's living room is mod but comfortable. Glossy white Cuban tiles are a contrast with chocolate-brown furniture.
