Interior decorating now their career
From Page 12 gree angle at the center in a chevron effect. A woven-wool shade covers the sliding-glass door (curtains are nonexistent in the entire house), and the dressing room, Irene says, is slated to be "tented." More than mere decorative whimsy is the large paddle-fan over the bed; it's used all winter instead of the air conditioner. But the most striking thing about the Lehman's bedroom is that it doesn't look like a bedroom, which is precisely what Irene had in mind when she designed it. "For the first time in my life I have a bedroom that's practical, one that I can serve and entertain in," she says. "I'm not big on bedroom furniture," she explains. "In every master bedroom I do, I try to put the dressers in the closet." Their own closet has everything built-in, with double rods for maximum utilization of space. Another personal touch in Irene's decorating is her use of homemade items. "I like getting my friends involved with my work by using their crafts in my home and in the homes I decorate," she says. "In one home I included fabric flowers made by my sister, pillows that I made, and macrame hangings, supergraphics and ceramic bowls made by friends. The upstairs of the Lehman's townhouse is described by Irene as being furnished in "Early New Jersey," no slur on the state intended, but rather a description of their more conservative taste when they were in the wholesale beauty supplies business up north until their move here three years ago. A smiling Polynesian god greets visitors as they approach the Lehman's front door through a lush "jungle" of landscaping.
