One life he's saved is his own
By DIXIE TATE Correspondent There are myths that have been fashioned through the years concerning a number of American institutions. One such romantic yarn centers around that tall, tanned, muscular body basking in the suns' gentle rays at your favorite beach. "Lifeguard — Every girls summer dream." That's how one movie advertisement described it. Viewed in this manner, it is understandable why some men, with such power lying at the very foot of the stand, might dream of being a lifeguard, perhaps even for the largest part of their lives. But compare your own idea of a lifeguard with this story of Mike Tobey, who at age 20 is the youngest full-time lifeguard employed at Crandon Park. Not unlike the other guards, Mike is golden brown, has reddish-blond hair and is six-foot, 185-pounds. But there is a certain inner happiness, even brightness, that radiates from him. The warmth one is apt to feel when around him is not because he's been in the sun too long, but because he has an unshakeable faith in God. "My whole life is centered around Jesus Christ. My faith is everything to me," Mike said. "God has the first say-so in my life. I believe that man put me here because he thinks I can handle it." Mike, who lives at 6831 SW 78th Terr., is a warm, sensitive person. He was born in Miami. His father was in the service and the moves took Mike to a lot of places — Panama City Beach, Fort Worth, Texas, and Okinawa to mention a few. 'Moving has benefitted me a great deal. I've had a chance in 20 years to see and meet more people than most do in lifetime," Mark remarked. He attended five schools in his junior high years, but is thankful for this, too. He feels that it makes one work that much harder to catch up. Mike has been a guard at Crandon for six months, working a 40-hour week, but his primary concern is his education. He attends Miami-Dade and has one more semester left as a business law major.
