'Born Sexy' / A film for all parents, kids
By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer "Born Sexy" is one film you won't find at the adult flicks. People who should try to see it, however, are parents of young children, people who expect to someday be parents, and, especially, those who find that the subject of sex education makes them uneasy. Marcia Dombro, a Kendall resident and nurse who gives instruction in natural childbirth, and Leah Kinnard, a nurse from Perrine who teaches Community Health at the University of Miami, first prepared the slide-tape show as a project for an FIU graduate course on Adult Education, not expecting that it would evolve into a commercial venture. They've subsequently had several copies made of the film, which they've been selling to medical schools, PTA groups, etc., as part of an entire package of learning materials. "Sex education begins at birth; it doesn't just suddenly happen at age 13," says Marcia, who, as an obstetrical nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital, comes in constant contact with teenage girls who very obviously were in need of better instruction. Together Marcia and Leah wrote the script for the slide show, and a photographer friend, Julius Sirilo, also a Kendall resident, took the pictures, mostly using members of their own families. The film, which was shown on Channel 2 last fall during National Sex Education Week, is intended to be shown in conjunction with an instruction kit, which includes a pre-test and post-test, bibliography of resources, guide for group leaders, and a booklet of guidelines for parents and help them to be the sex educators of their children. The purpose of the program, Marcia says, "is to help people learn to internalize what they see, and to change their feelings by seeing how other people feel about the same thing." The real learning, she says, takes place in the small group discussions which follow the slide show.
