Rabbi's wife embarks on second professional career

Gabriela Landau holds one of her photographs By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer "When you're part of a community for a long time, you want that community to be a good one," says Gabriela Landau, explaining why so much of her energy is directed toward this goal. As the wife of Rabbi Sol Landau, of Beth David Congregation, her life would be fulfilling and time-consuming if she did nothing else, yet Gabriela -- a former professional photographer -- is preparing to embark on a second career. She's about half-way through a Master's program in Public Administration in FIU's Department of Business and Organizational Sciences, having already received a B.A. in Sociology from that school. "I decided I had to broaden my horizons," she says. "I never had the opportunity to get a college education at the age that most people did, since I had just resettled from Germany to the United States at that time." As part of her under-graduate course Gabriela designed a program for welcoming Jewish newcomers to Miami, which she implemented through the Greater Miami Jewish Federation's Women's Division, as vice president of Education and Community Education for this organization. It was so successful that she has assumed the overall chairmanship of the program. Its ultimate goal is to help reduce the wide-spread alienation that afflicts people who don't feel that they're part of a larger community. She says that although she used just the Jewish community as a model for her program, seeing how well it worked has encouraged her to think about its application on a much broader level. "The community is dichotomized between three different cultural elements . . . and we don't work hard enough at making this a better community for the groups to work closely together . . . If people don't feel that they're part of a group, each individual just tries to make it for himself, competing for better houses and better cars, instead of striving for better parks and better neighborhoods . . ." For the moment, Gabriela is concentrating fuly on her studies, but hopes eventually to find a position in management, either in the public or private sector. A busy career, however, is nothing new to Gabriela. She worked as a professional photographer in New York for many years, as assistant to a well-known photographer, Fritz Henle. Gabriela was put in charge of Henle's entire operation, managing the staff and studio during his long absences, and occasionally accompanying him on location to different parts of the world. Gabriela's own photos have been published in numerous magazines, and have appeared in exhibits in New York. Selections from her photographic study of New York's Lower East Side are in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum and the University of Lyons. One of her most cherished memories was meeting world-famous photographer Edward Steichen, who had requested the interview after seeing some of Gabriela's works. "He spoke to me for about 45 minutes," she says, "and was See SHE, Page 22
