Antiques are found in midwest farmhouses

Continuous band of windows encircle frame home From Page 11/18 charming "sitting room" at the front of the house, featuring a small table and chairs, such as would be found at a Parisian sidewalk cafe. The central core of the house consists of the livingroom, dining room, and a small unnamed room at the back, which Lois says is "for all those things you don't have a place for, but don't want to put too far away, in case you need them." An old-fashioned winding wooden staircase at the back of this room leads to the second floor, which Lois described as "terribly tacky," explaining that they simply haven't gotten around to fixing it up yet. "After all," she says, "you always have to save something to look forward to doing.". Here are situated the master bedroom, its walk-in closet in a sus-pended state of semi-completion, and a smaller room which Lois uses for sewing. The furnishings throughout the house are predominantly Early American, but hardly the circa-1976 pieces found in department and furniture stores. The Neidharts, who make frequent trips through the midwest, have picked up many of their things at antique stores and farmhouses, without always knowing where in the house they will end up. Six dogs - a mother and five of her offspring - guard the premises, obviously enjoying the spacious grounds. A pool has recently been installed, and Lois says that Paul's next major project - along with finishing the upstairs and putting in a circular driveway - is to deck the pool area.

He'll answer decorating questions

From Page 11/18 by means of a comprehensive questionnaire, they present the client with a complete design kit, which she can fill at her own pace and her own price. By this means Evans says the "intimidation factor" in decorating is eliminated, since it's never necessary to ask a person how much she wants to spend. "It's the professional advice that makes the difference," says Evans, "not the size of the client's budget." Letters for Evans' column should be addressed to The Coral Gables Times/Guide, 4627 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables 33146. He will answer letters personally should space limit those which can be published. Those wishing a private consultation with Evans can leave a message to that effect at the Times/Guide office, 666-7981, ext. 25. - DOROTHY STEIN

Jott Green Thumb

BY MARY FUREY CRYMES On your long, autumnal rambles, you're apt to see a garden or two abloom with lovely flowers that will remind you of nothing more than spring's crocus. That's because they are crocus - autumn crocus - related but separated by blooming seasons. Beg, borrow or order some autumn crocus. They should be planted in late August, but if you're in a moderate-to-warm zone, they can go in later. Not much is going to happen till the following June anyway but meanwhile you feed and water, as for any bulb, and wait. You're bound to be a bit confused, because two varieties are called "Autumn Crocus," but one is really Colchicum (accent on the first syllable). Colchicum is sometimes called Meadow Saffron; though precious, real saffron comes from the stigma of the other kind of Autumn Crocus - C. sativus - which yields up the rare and costly golden powder used in cooking and coloring I would like to add that Colchicum is beloved of gout sufferers and history records that King Henry VIII not only ate it; but used it profusely for his ailment. Now we'll go on to another fall favorite you'll spy in neighbor's gardens - the autumn daffodil, or Sternbergia. This is a lovely bedding flower that produces bright yellow blooms just like its early spring prototype. You plant the bulbs 3 to 4 inches deep in loamy soil, water lightly and mulch with peat. Again, depending upon climate, you can sow the bulbs as late as November. To add to the confusion, the fall daffodil is a member of the Amaryllis family - but we'd better not get into that, right? Both kinds of bulbs need thinning, watering and as much light as they can get. They can be brought indoors, potted and nurtured to make lovely holiday gifts. (Suburban Features)
