Supermarket complains SM bike races cancelled
By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer The second annual bicycle races, originally scheduled for March in downtown City of South Miami, have been cancelled at the mutual consent of the promoter and the city council. For safety's sake, the promoter, Nicholas Arkontaky, didn't want to change the route of the races through the city's downtown area. And the city's legislators didn't want a supermarket at 5850 SW 73rd St. to lose business for the second consecutive year by having the entrance to its parking lot barricaded. The council Tuesday night, Jan. 4, told Arkontaky, "Thanks, but no thanks," after listening to the manager of the supermarket, Michael White, tell of losing up to 2,000 customers on the February Sunday when the race was held last year. "Beside that," added Councilwoman Jean Willis, "I don't think the people of South Miami are interested enough in the races to force a business to lose customers and money." Arkontaky wanted the races ridden over the same course as last year-Sunset Drive to SW 57th Court, south on 57th Court to 73rd Street, west on 73rd Street to 59th Avenue and back to Sunset Drive. To deviate from this route, Arkontaky explained, the races would have to be put onto a more narrow street, which could be hazardous to the cyclists, particularly at the speeds they are traveling. The races last year drew champion cyclists from throughout the country and Canada for the six events, but only about. several hundred spectators. The races this year were expected to draw more spectators because they wouldn't be competing with the Coconut Grove Art Show as they were last year, Arkontaky said. The city council was reluctant to spend the $750, which City Manager Jack Present estimated it would cost the city for police protection and the moving of equipment, such as the judge platform and barricades.
