HSA turns down requests for centers
The pain and problems had only just begun for Bob after he had a cancerous tumor removed from behind his ear. His doctor prescribed daily radiotherapy treatments, but since Bob lived in Cutler Ridge and the nearest treatment center was in Mercy Hospital, this meant a daily journey of more than 25 miles. The treatments made him nauseous and unable to drive himself to and from the hospital so his wife took over the chauffering. That meant taking their young son with them each time, or leaving him with a babysitter. Thus followed ten weeks of fighting traffic, nausea and high gas bills and losing time at work. Bob's case in hypothetical, but not uncommon for people living in South Dade. "Within a few years, this region will produce 300 radiotherapy patients a year, and there is no radiotherapy treatment center in South Dade," said Dr. Ed Feller, Friday at a meeting of the South Dade Chamber of Commerce. Because there are already five treatment center in Dade County, all north of Mercy Hospital, the federal Health Systems Agency (HSA) this summer turned down requests from South Miami Hospital and Baptist Hospital to build treatment centers, Dr. Feller said. "They got figures somewhere to show that the other five were operating only at 45 per cent capacity," he added, "but we fully documented that they were already almost full, and their technicians said so, too." "It is inhuman to make people who are sick and suffering travel so far," added Dr. Martin Liebling.

Height saves Coral Gables man's life
Coral Gables resident Louis Seller escaped major injuries Wednesday thanks to his height. Seller, 26, and James C. Schmitt, 22, were in the process of painting an apartment building at 11 Edgewater Dr., in Coral Gables, when their metal ladder brushed against a 1,300-volt electric power line. Schmitt, the taller of the two men, received the high voltage shock since he was holding the ladder at a higher position than Seller. Schmitt, who lived at 24 Euclid Dr., died several hours later. Seller, who lives at 1215 Algeria Ave., was released from South Miami Hospital on Friday.
