Merchants thank SM police for 'fine protection' over holidays
By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer The City of South Miami police department may be in a hassle with some former police officers, but the city's merchants believe the city's finest were just that during the congested Christmas holidays. The president of the Red-Sunset Merchants Association has sent a letter of appreciation to Mayor Jack Block for the "fine protection" the merchants received during the holiday season. ". . .We have received many, many favorable comments from our members; kudos are due to you, to the members of the city council for their interest in the merchant area and to City Manager Jack Present and Police Chief Sal Vizzini for their utmost cooperation in meeting the needs of the area," said Charles Garber, the head of the Merchants Association. Garber cited one incident in which the police protection in downtown South Miami was beefed up and phone calls of assurance were made after a merchant in nearby Coral Gables was shot in trying to protect his store.
Residents complain of poor public services
From Page 1 said. "We don't want to mislead people to think this area won't be developed if it's usage isn't changed. One part is already zoned for four-unit apartments. Things may get worse before they get better, though." In a December study of the area, the planning department recommended the Master Plan be changed to show this agricultural area as urban, even though police and school services are presently lacking and show no signs of improvement. Presently, 62 percent of the area is zoned for urban uses. "The Master Plan has become a source of exasperation for my neighbors and I," said Tom Wolmack of 24151 SW 123rd Ave. "Three weeks ago I was robbed and the police came four hours later." Carole Fink, also of South Dade, added, "My kids aren't getting the education I got here in Dade County."
