UM swimmers open season against Illinois
Southern Illinois will be the first 1977 opponent for Bill Diaz's University of Miami swimming team. The visitors invading the UM Pool at 12 p.m., Jan. 12. Six other dual meets — four of them at home — are also on the schedule. The Hurricane pool will also be the site for the 1977 National Independent Collegiate Championships March 3-5. Miami has finished ninth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association meet the last three years but faces the new year without its chief NCAA point getter, All-American ace and Olympic gold medalist David Wilike. Also gone are All-America swimmers Steve Lichtner and Chris McKee. Returnees include Greg Garlich and Paul Naisby, point winners in the 1976 NCAA meet, plus Kevin McGarity, Gary Rees, Sean Maher, Kirt Peppas, Gene McIntyre and Dan Olson, who competed in the NCAA meet. Diaz has 16 lettermen available along with several outstanding freshmen and four members of the British 1976 Olympic team. He believes his 1977 team will have greater depth than any previous Miami team and will be highly competitive in every meet in which it competes. Schedule Jan. 12-Southern Illinois.. 'Oh Mona' — old and worn but still the boat to beat
From Page 1 about racing and the boat." The boat, "Oh Mona," is the oldest on the GN circuit. Its mahogany deck is cracked in places and starting to show signs of age. Most GN drivers think, or at least hope, that she won't be able to withstand the pressure of the new racing format. Unlike previous years, this year's Mike Gordon 100 will include three 15-minute qualifying heats. A driver must finish in the top half of one of the heats to make it into the 45 minute final. The more Daily has to drive, the more chance "Oh Mona" has of breaking down. At least, that's what the other drivers are saying. "But I'm not worried about it," Daily says, patting Oh Mona's hull. "This may be an old boat, but she's a good one. She hasn't lost yet." So when the turkey shoot begins, Daily thinks he'll still be the one to beat. And with his record, who can argue.
