Studio apartments can be fun, cozy
dear decorator . . . al evans Dear Decorator: Hope you can help me. I have just moved into a studio apartment that has a kitchen, bathroom and [one huge square living room-bedroom. The apartment came with red carpet, which I hate, and I have no furniture as yet. I love modern furniture and dramatic colors, such as charcoal gray and black. I can't spend too much money, but I want to complete a sharp, comfortable "drop dead" look. How can I do it? Good luck. I love your column. Alice Michael Winston Park Dear Square: Thank you for your love. As for your hate, let's see what we can do about it. Studio apartments can be fun to live in and decorate. Since we can't do anything about your red "hateful" carpeting, my suggestion is to just ignore it for the present. Your preference for dramatic colors of charcoal gray and black is great. Let's work with them and add some snowy white and a sparkling silver. Glass works well in small apartments and gives the effect of floating in space. So for your dining area, use either a round or square glass-top table and plexi chairs. These are available at moderate prices. Use a pair of white loveseats which convert to sleepers. These are available ready-made in vinyl. Place a lightweight glass-and-chrome coffee table between them. For lighting, use contemporary fixtures which are available to suit any budget. For the dining area, purchase a hanging fixture of chrome, and for your sitting-sleeping area, an arc-type floor lamp works great. One comfortable occasional chair covered in a charcoal gray vinyl would do well. If your budget allows, an area rug in shades of gray, charcoal, black and white would do a lot for that red carpet. On your windows use mini-slat blinds in chrome and on your walls a rich gray flat paint. The kitchen and bath would be fine if done in a modern pattern Mylar or foil wallcovering. The total look is now sharp, practical, comfortable and as for "drop dead" - well, you decide. Al Evans is a practicing, professional interior designer in Miami. Real Estate MEL AUGUST G.R.I. REALTOR
LET THERE BE LIGHT Your telephone rings. It is your REALTOR saying that he is coming right over with a prospect. You hang up the phone. What's the next thing you do? Turn on every light in the house. Why? Because you want to give the prospect the best image you can of the comfort, beauty and livability you are offering. In other words, you want to sell a home not a house. And full illumination is the best way to give your home that "lived-in" look. Furniture and rugs and fixtures take on a warm glow from the proper lighting. Here are a few "bright" ideas: Turn on every lamp in the living room, bedrooms and family room. Be careful about turning on the overhead lights in these rooms for it could be harsh and make the room look uninviting. Turn on every light in a storage room or closet. Go all out in illuminating the kitchen - the cheerier the better. Brighten up the bathroom too - but carefully choose the right wattage for bulbs by the mirror, pick the most flattering one. Remember, it's just as important to have lights on in the afternoon as it is for a night-time showing. *********** If there is anything we can do to help you in the field of real estate, please phone or drop in at M.
