Rabbi tries to bring young Jews back to their heritage

By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer "Judaism is not something we attach to ourselves; it's within us already, but we have to bring it out into the open," says Rabbi Avrohom Korf, referring to the alienated Jewish youth whom he sees as "trying on" different faiths in the hopes of find one that's "meaningful." Noting that an inordinately high percentage of the followers of recent mystical, quasi-religious and drug-related groups are Jewish, Rabbi Korf says that his mission is to help bring these young people back to their rightful heritage. Rabbi Korf is regional director of Chabad-Lubavitch, an outgrowth of the Chassidic movement in Judaism, which is headquartered on Miami Beach. This fall a new center, Chabad House, was opened on the University of Miami campus, which Rabbi Korf hopes will offer the apathetic and uncommitted students a fresh new alternative to Judaism, through counseling, lectures and seminars, holiday programs, and as simply a place to get together. (Although Chabad House already offers Kosher meals, a health food restaurant and Kosher pizza shop will soon be included, says Rabbi Korf, admittedly as an additional lure.) The word "Chabad," he explains, is a combination of three Hebrew words: "chochmo"-wisdom; "bino"-understanding; and "daas"-knowledge-and it is precisely toward these aims that the movement strives. (The motto of Chabad-Lubavitch is "Let My People Know.") One night a week Rabbi Korf also meets with about a dozen adults in the Kendall area, for an informal study group, in which he attempts to clarify for them some of the more arcane aspects of the Torah, and to show them how to apply its teachings to everday life. "The Torah teaches us to look a little deeper," he says. The group has been meeting for about three months at the various members' homes, and will continue "indefinitely," since there is literally no end to the subject matter. He says that he will be happy to participate in other similar study groups. Rabbi Avrohom Korf opened the Chabad House on the University of Miami campus as a place for young people to get together.
