Dolores Wright Will Seek National Declamation Title

Preparing to compete for national dramatic declamation honors in Jennings, Mo. on May 2 is Dolores Wright, Ponce de Leon High School student who walked away with top state honors in that competition at the National Forensic League Speech Festival held in Orlando, March 31 As pretty as she is clever, Dolores models for the Gibson Girls of Miami and is a member of the Miami Little Theater, National Forensic League, Top Hatters, and National Thespians. Last summer Dolores was selected as the only student from Florida to attend the Northwestern University High School Institute. "The Tell Tale Heart" was the winning selection used by Miss Wright during the Orlando contest. Dolores will be a speech major when she enters Northwestern this fall. Ponce de Leon High School placed second in the Speech Festival, Other students who appeared as finalists included Darryl McCall, Denis O'Donovan, George Strehkle, Tom Hale, and Helen Johanson. YMCA NOTES

GRA Y The Coral Gables Gra-Y softballers will meet the Miami Edison YMCA Club at 3:30 on Monday at Coliseum Field. The regular meeting of the local Gra-Y Club is slated for 3:15 Tuesday at the Coral Gables Elementary School. A talk on fire prevention will be given by a representative of the Miami fire department. The Craft Class which has been meeting on Wednesday afternoons held the last session this week. Herman Becker, the instructor, is leaving for the North soon. Becker taught ceramics and wood carving. A father and son banquet is being planned for this month and will be held at the YMCA. JUNIOR HI-Y Wednesday, April 16, the Coral Gables Junior Hi-Y will hold its weekly meeting at the Coral Gables Elementary School. An overnight hike will be held Saturday, April 19. Mike East, advisor, and Jack Benson will accompany the group. Plans for beautifying the school grounds are under way, Tom Tittlee, Chairman of the Projects Committee, announced. HI-Y The Ponce Hi-Y Program Committee met with Robert W. Hervett, the YMCA Executive, at the Y on Thursday to make plans for a Hi-Y Sweetheart Dance to be held at the Ponce de Leon High School on Friday, May 2. At that time a Hi-Y sweetheart will be chosen as the outstanding girl of the year. Plans for a Membership Dance will be held at the YMCA to raise money for the YMCA World Youth Fund are under way, Fraser Knight, Bill Farwell, Bill Cann and Ray Williams, the program committee members, announced. At the last meeting of the Hi-Y they voted to give $50.00 to the high school Debating Club to help defray some of their expenses. UNIVERSITY YMCA The Student YMCA of the University of Miami will hold the third and final lecture of the series of Marriage and Family Life when Dr. Dorn Klemer, director of the Miami Marriage and Family Life council will speak to the joint YMCA-YWCA groups on Wednesday, April 23, at 7:30 P.M. at the YMCA, 2901 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Dr. Klemer will discuss the lecture on Love, Courtship and Marriage that Dr. Paul Popenoe presented to the University of Miami students on April 9. A social hour will follow the meeting.

Softball Play Starts Monday

Softballs are flying, mitts are being oiled, and bats are swinging at the Coral Gables Youth Center. For on Monday, the first of three softball leagues will answer the cry, "play ball." With games scheduled through June 18, the Youth Center high school league will set the pace when WBAY tangles with Wichard Beauty Salon at 6 p. m. The league, which meets six days a week, boasts eight squads. Taylor's Sports Shop follows the opener when they tee off against Olin's Garage on Tuesday. They're followed on Wednesday by Daniel's Department Store and Turner-Evans Sports Shop. Thursday night opens the show for Renuart Lumber and St. Theresa. A week from Thursday, the Elementary School League opens its campaign with schedules planned for three days a week. The youngsters will clash at 4 p. m. on Wednesday and Thursday, with twin bills planned for Saturday mornings. The double-headers will be played at 10 a. m. and 11:15 a. m. Seven teams compose the Elementary League. They are as follows: Optimist Club, Huskamp Motors, WBAY, Verna and Barney's, Lowry Electric, Richard Service Station and the Youth Center Midgets. The Optimists will do battle with Huskamp on Wednesday, while WBAY faces Verna and Barney's on Thursday. First game of a twin bill will be played between Lowry and Richard Service Station, and the Optimists will slug it out with Verna and Barney's in the nightcap. Trophies will be awarded the league winners and individual players. The men's softball league will get underway one week from Monday with nine clubs taking part in the action. A weekly schedule is planned through August 18.

Music Groups Hear Washburn At Convention

Oliver P. Washburn, president of the Philharmonic Society of Greater Miami, flew to St. Augustine on Wednesday, where he spoke before the convention of the Florida Federation of Music Clubs, on behalf of the Society, which is now affiliated with the Federation, through the Coral Gables Music Club. Through the courtesy of WBAY, which provided a transcription phonograph, Washburn played a recording of one of the Philharmonic radio programs for the convention. Mrs. Helen Pennock, Mrs. Fred Grinham, Mrs. Bertha Foster and others from this area attended the meeting.

Kaiser-Frazier Agency Will Open Here

Whidden Motor Sales, Inc. will occupy the Galloway building and the new building near completion on the corner of Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Bird Road on April 26, it was announced today. Whidden Sales will be the agency for Kaiser-Frasier, in Coral Gables, and state distributors for Ward LaFrance of New York manufacturers of heavy trucks and fire trucks. "We will have 1947 model cars before the end of next week" Albert S. Whidden, executive vice-president and treasurer who is head of the company locally, stated. A former advertising man Whidden worked in New York and in Europe for many years. He sparked the campaign for the Florida Citrus Commission in Lakeland, Florida in 1935 when they first initiated their advertising. Married and the father of three daughters, aged 2, 4, and 6, Whidden served in the navy for three years in both European and Pacific theaters. He traded Polk county for Dade county when he moved to Miami nine years ago. He married here in Miami in 1940. George R. Grissinger has been designated sales manager for the new organization. Formerly from Detroit Michigan, Grissinger served in World War I as a captain in the air corps, and holds the title "ace" for shooting down more than five German planes.

Gables Boxers to Meet Fort Myers Mittmen

From bantamweights to heavyweights they'll be mixing it up plenty one week from Saturday when the Coral Gables Youth Center sends a strong boxing squad to Ft. Myers. Twelve Youth Center hopefuls will square off with the West coast boys club.
