MRS. CURTIS HAGGARD HEADS JUNIOR WOMEN
MRS. CURTIS HAGGARD New President of Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club Into the capable hands of Mrs. Curtis Haggard this week was given the task of guiding and directing the activities of the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club. The attractive blonde young Gables matron was elected president of the Club for the 1947-48 season at the annual balloting held Wednesday. Mrs. Haggard, who succeeds Mrs. Joseph T. Cox in the president's chair, served during the year just past in the capacity of 1st vice president. Other officers who will be formally installed with the new president at ceremonies to be held at the Columbus Hotel on May 7th are Mrs. Charles DeCamp, 1st vice president; Mrs. Rudolph B. Walter, 2nd vice president; Mrs. David Bosworth, financial secretary; and Mrs. William Howdon, treasurer. Also elected were Mrs. William C. White and Mrs. James Deen, directors; Mrs. Andrew Somma, recording secretary; and Mrs. Howard Biggers, auditor. The junior club executives will take their oaths of office at ceremonies which will also see the formal induction of new officers of the parent organization, the Coral Gables Woman's Club. The senior group has scheduled its elections for April 21. Mrs. Haggard announced that plans have been completed and final arrangements are being made for the Junior Woman's Club may dance to be held at the Coral Gables Country Club on May 1. Under the direction of Mrs. Thomas Campbell, dance chairman, talented members are busily rehearsing the combination skit and musical review which will be presented at the affair.
Mrs. Anna Benedict Honors Mother
Mrs. Anna Benedict of 2826 W. 52nd Court, entertained a oup of friends recently honoring er mother-in-law Mrs. C. A. oore on the occasion of her 88th irthday anniversary. Mrs. Poore received many gifts and highlight of the afternoon was the recital of several poems by Mrs. Poore, including "The Deacons Wonderful One Horse Shay" and "The Boston Calf Path." Among guests were Mrs. Julius Engle of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Paul Spatz of Schofield, Wis., daughter and niece of the honer guest; Mrs. H. W. Kurtz, Mrs. Theodore Kundtz, Mrs. H. D. Perkins, Mrs. L. B. Benedict, Mrs. C. White and the Misses Arlean and Sharron Benedict.
COCO PLUM CLUB WOMEN TO HAVE ANTIQUE SHOW
A collection of antiques and family treasures loaned by members of the Coco Plum Women's Club will be on display at the club at the 3 p.m. meeting Wednesday when the American Homes Department presents its program. Mrs. Horace W. Scott, chairman is being assisted by Mrs. Van E. Huff. Among interesting items is an ancient Danish Kings Wine cup. In the early days Denmark was divided into many kingdoms, each with its own king. When one of of these Kings died he was buried with all his possessions in his own Kingdom in a King's Mound. Denmark has many of these mounds and the wine Cup on display is from one of these mounds and was presented to Mr. Frederick Ravlin by the Danish Government in appreciation of research work he did for them on mineral deposits in the country. There will be many early American objects including furniture, brass, pewter and silver objects. If anyone has a treasure they would like to share with their friends they may call Mrs. Scott at 4-9841 or Mrs. Huff at 4-1730 and they will be delighted to find a place for it in the exhibit. Mrs. W. Frank Blanton will give a talk on antiques and will have some of her lovely pieces on display. Mrs. Georgia Brown with the Hart Auction Galleries on Miami Beach or one of her representatives will also speak. Refreshments will be served by the hostesses for the day. Chairman of the Committee is Mrs. A. T. Pendray assisted by Mesdames C. Earnest Snyder, H. E. Rothwell, J. E. Preston, Marian Lee, W. C. Strahler, R. F. Riley, Arthur M. Viely, and Wm. Angerman.
Gables Newcomers Organize Club
Mrs. W. C. Chandler Jr. was named president of the Welcome Wagon Newcomer's Club of Coral Gables this week at an organizational meeting held at the Hasta Manana restaurant. She will be assisted in directing the activities of the group by Mrs. L. W. Irwin, 1st vice president; Mrs. Marjorie Hager, 2nd vice president; and Mrs. William A. Papy III, secretary treasurer. Mrs. H. O. Johnson, organizer of the club, extended an invitation to all newcomers to the Gables to join the group.
Ponce Students to Demonstrate Physical-Ed Accomplishments
A physical education demonstration by some 600 students will be presented for the Ponce de Leon Parent Teacher association Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. Fabian Hoffman, director of physical education, has planned the program in cooperation with the PTA program chairman, Mrs. A. Judson Hill, and Miss Alice Jacobs and Mrs. Ethel Steele, in charge of physical education for girls. The students will demonstrate practically the entire gamut of activities which comprise the physical education program at Ponce. According to Mr. Hoffman, both the boys and girls are "proud of their accomplishments and are eager to show their parents their progress." The demonstration will include Boys and Girls gym tumbling, pyramids and apparatus work; marching and calisthenics, basketball, volleyball, square dancing, etc. Following the program a brief business session will be held with refreshments and social hour. The nominating committee, headed by Mrs. E. F. P. Brigham, will present a slate of officers to be balloted on at the May meeting. Other reports will be given by cafeteria chairman, Mrs. Jack Harding; audio-visual aid, Mrs. Gilbert Broking; library, Mrs. George Dacy; safety, Mrs. C. J. Huskamp.
Reunion at Young's Brings Family
The C. G. Youngs of 817 Alhambra Circle were hosts at a full-fledged family reunion this week. Their daughter, Mrs. E. A. Cahill, and her husband arrived from Boston and will make the Gables their headquarters while Mr. Cahill makes a speaking tour of the South in behalf of the Unitarian Service Committee. Also guests at the Young home are Capt. C. G. Young, Jr., and his wife. Capt. Young is stationed in Philadelphia where he is attached to the anti-aircraft branch of the Coast Artillery Corps.
Garden Club Members Are Special Guests
Members of the Coral Gables Garden Club were special guests yesterday at the open house being held at the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, 601 S.W. 8th Ave. Mrs. George M. Corrigan, serving as chairman of hostesses for the day, was assisted by Mrs. Howard Sullivan, Mrs. Creswell Stedman, Mrs. Evan D. Roser, Mrs. Phillip Kelleher, Mrs. George Arnold, Mrs. Earl DeNoon and Miss Dolly Gamble. Mrs. Carl Lambert, lighthouse secretary and music chairman for the open house, arranged the musical program.
Poetry Prizes Announced
The poetry clinic, Miami branch, National League of American Pen Women, has announced "White Lilacs," by Gertrude Gore Fowler, as the winner of both the first and popular prizes in a recent contest. Virginia Connett won first prize in another contest with her poem "Hill Woman."
