CORAL GABLES TENNIS NETS
By CHUCK WILEY Not one, not ten, not even twenty-five; but thirty-six trophies and other awards will be given the eighteen country clubbers who can prove themselves champions in the big four-week Club tennis tourney which begins tomorrow at 2 p.m. This tourney will include eleven events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, mixed doubles, boy's and girl's singles, boy's and girl's doubles, father-son doubles, and the husband-wife doubles. Speaking of tennis—the Club netters did a repeat performance with their 7-2 win over Henderson Park last Sunday. That's the same score they used in downing the Flamingo Park squad March 30. The women's tennis division also claimed an H.P. victory when they defeated the womenetters of Henderson 2-1. At present, the Club men's division ranks third in the South Florida Tennis League, while the women's squad ranks fourth. This Sunday both Club teams will cross racquets with the Salvadore Park squads at 2 p.m. on the Salvadore courts. Final Club book review-luncheon will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. Taking you behind the scenes with such celebrities as Isadore Duncan, Walter Winchell, Challiatin, and Tavlxva, Ramana S. Barth will review "Impressario," the memoirs of S. Hurok. Lucky stroker, low netter, and receiver of the Frances M. Gold trophy in the three-day, 54-hole ladies golf tournament last week, was Mrs. Rosmond Jordan with a net 220. Mrs. Meyer Gold was runner-up for said trophy with a score of 226. Mrs. William Redelsheimer was awarded a tan leather cased bridge set for low grossing a 279. Second highest low grosser was Mrs. Jordan with a 286. Topping the low putters with a 92, Mrs. Gold received the half-dozen golf ball award. Runner-up in this event was Mrs. Redelsheimer with a 94 score. Sad is the news I have for you golf enthusiasts this week. In case you haven't heard, there'll be no more blind bogeys written to tell you about for awhile on account of as how Umps thinks it advisable to discontinue the weekly blind bogeys until business at the course kinda' slows down. Seems as though the children weren't the only ones fascinated by Heidy's stories at the children's Easter party last Sunday. Fact is, it was hard to determine just who did enjoy the story of "Cottontail, The Country Bunny" the mostest; children or their parents ? ? ? This was also true of the magician's act and his amazing feat of pulling a real live bunny out of a hat. Not even an atom can do that. Incidentally, because of such a large turnout (about 475), the egg hunt was not held. Instead, the eggs were bagged, along with gummy candy bunnies, and given to the children as part of their refreshments. Other refreshments included orangeade, cookies, ice cream, and candy. Duplicate bridge winners of the April 3 session were Mrs. W. H. Holcomb and Mrs. Annabel Wilson. Mrs. Catherine Rhoads and Mrs. Joseph Fitzpatrick teamed to win the April 7 North and South duplicate. Winners of the East and West dup were Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Washburn. Reminder—Only two more of the Sally Strahler bridge lectures remain to be heard. The nights are April 17 and 24 at 8. Homes Lag, Apartments Up Building Statistics Reveal
Coral Gables 1947 residential construction program is lagging behind 1946 by 81 homes and $204,200, a recapitulation of building statistics through March 1947, released this week by Building Inspector Gilbert B. Campbell revealed today. Homes built during the first three months of 1947 total 44 at a construction cost of $619,900 as compared to 75 residences valued at $824,100 built during the same period the previous year, Campbell's figures revealed. During the month just ended, permits were issued for the construction of 20 residences at a total cost of $230,050. The largest of these will be a $16,000 home which is being constructed by R. J. Sullivan at 3925 Durango Street. On the other hand apartment permits issued the first three months of this year soared above January, February, and March of '46 with a total of five apartments costing $137,350 as compared to two buildings constructed last year costing $32,000. The biggest month for apartment construction in 1946 was October when $114,000 worth of permits were issued for building five apartments. Permits for 25 stores were issued during all of last year totaling $708,750 and of these 22 were issued during the first three months alone bringing the sum up to $690,000 and leaving only three issuances for the remaining nine months of the year. In comparison, the first three months of '47 totaled $135,000 worth of permits for the construction of five stores. So far 1947 leads '46 in the number of addition and alteration permits issued during the first three months of both years. Permits for 1947 are well over four times those issued in the first three months of '46 with a total of 101 permits adding up to the sum of $56,678 as compared to $26,775 for the 24 permits issued last year.

University Chorale Debut Pleases Critical Audience
An event of real musical significance took place Wednesday evening, April 2nd, when, under William J. Lee's able direction, the newly formed University Chorale made its delightful debut, presenting a program of artistic merit, in the Coral Gables Congregational church. Thirty-two voices, sixteen male and sixteen female, blended in perfect balance and exact timing, responding magically to Mr. Lee's persuasive and thorough training and inspired direction. The program was the sort that holds the audience throughout, with songs of contrasting types, irresistible rhythms, lovely tonal quality and beautiful, resonant pianissimos. Most outstanding in beauty and musicianship was Brahm's Liebeslieder Walzer, Opus 52, with Annie Laurie Lee, talented accompanist of the group, and Margaret Ann Turner, giving excellent support at the two pianos. Handel's "Let their Celestial Concerts all Unite", and Thompson's "Alleluia" received interesting interpretations, and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" (Arr. Wilhousky) rang out with stirring tonal effect. The group of spirituals, in which the very pleasing soloists were Melanis Kulhanjian, Geraldine Rasmusson, Pat Rosson and Walson Dutton, charmed the audience with its persistent undercurrent of rhythm and wistful melancholy. Of the last group of popular type, the "Begin the Beguine" by Cole Porter delighted the listeners and Mr. Lee's arrangement of Mana-Zucca's new song, "The Golden Rule" received an ovation. The University is to be congratulated on its selection of Mr. Lee as builder of this promising Chorale, which can become one of it very own most outstanding musical achievements.—Ars Longa.
