Business, Professional Women Elect Miss Dora Thomas; Initiate 29 New Members

Miss Dora Thomas was named to head the Coral Gables Business and Professional Women's Club for the 1947-48 term at annual elections held by the group Tuesday evening. Miss Thomas will take over the gavel from Miss Rose Horn, retiring president. Others elected to serve in executive capacity during the coming year were June McKay, 1st vice president; Miss Horn, 2nd vice president; Bertha Kinney, recording secretary; Marjorie Anderson, corresponding secretary and Lillian Snow, treasurer. Highlighting the meeting also was a supper and reception honoring Mrs. Edythe Phillips of Lake Worth, and newly scepter members of the Business and Professional Women's group. Mrs. Phillips, district director of district seven, Florida Federation, initiated the 29 new members taken into the club during the past year. Miss Thomas, membership chairman and first vice president, was assisted by Miss Georgia Pankey and Miss Frances Burell. Those initiated include: Lillian Maynard, Marjorie Paselk, Mrs. Grayce Wedemeyer, Frieda Elvers, Pauline Hartley, Evelyn Davies, Evelyn R. Johns, Mary E. Hickey, Josephine Cappucio, Gloria Robinson, Carolyn Stokes, Louise Egan, Zebbie Newbold. Rachel Hastings, Catherine McKay, Paula Baker, Julia Fitch, Faye Schwartz, Mary Ann Hayden, Grace H. Benedict, Grayce Mae Benedict, Mrs. Graham D. Stubbs, Mary Elizabeth Orr, Kathleen Fitzgerald, Dr. Adele Hampton, Joyce Hockaday, Rita Rose Kohl, Cecelia Perron and Allyne Sain.

BRIDE-ELECT HONORED AT APRIL SHOWER

An April shower for an April bride was the theme when Mrs. W. Frank Godwin, Jr., entertained in honor of Miss Dorothy Baker recently. Miss Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Baker of 829 Avenue Genoa, will exchange vows with Ray Pearson, Pan American Airways pilot from Seattle, Washington, on Wednesday. The ceremony, to take place in the parish house of St. Theresa's, will be followed by a wedding reception at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. Robert Boxn, 4267 Lennox Drive, Coconut Grove. The bride-elect was graduated from St. Theresa's in 1945. Mr. Pearson attended school in his home state and was graduated from the University of Washington.

Latin-American Pianist To Play In Final University Concerts

Jesus Maria Sanroma, noted Latin American pianist, will be soloist at the two final symphony concerts to be presented by the University Orchestra Sunday afternoon and Monday evening at Miami Senior High. Dr. Modeste Alloo will conduct the orchestra in presentations of Jubilee from the Symphonic Sketches by Chadwick; Prokofieff's Classical Symphony; Divertissement by Ibert and concerto in A Minor for Piano and Orchestra by Paderewski. Sanroma will be heard in the Paderewski concerto. The Sunday concert will start at 4:30 p.m. and the Monday evening program at 8:30. SANROMA

PLAN PARTY

The Estrellita Club of Coral Gables, Chapter No. 174, O.E.S., will sponsor a dessert-bridge party at the home of Mrs. Effie England, 335 Avenue Menores, on Tuesday. The affair is scheduled to start at 12:30 P.M.

SUPPER PARTY HONORS LIONS

Lionizing the Lions will be the order of the evening Tuesday when members of the women's auxiliary of the Coral Gables service Club honor their husbands at a supper party. The affair, which is being arranged by Mrs. Donald F. Peck, will be held at the home of Mrs. Mary Faust, 21 Sunset Drive, South Miami. In addition to an elaborate buffet the party will feature games and old fashioned square dancing. Mrs. Peck is being assisted by a committee comprising Mrs. A. I. Lancaster, Mrs. J. K. Cole, Mrs. John Rosasco and Mrs. Harry Taylor.

Named Soloist

Helen Burruss of 1225 Alhambra Circle has been named soloist for the Royal Poinciana District, State Federation of Music Clubs at the meeting now in session at St. Augustine. Mrs. Hollis Bush of South Miami, is accompanist.

University Women To Hear Architect

Members of the American Association of University Women will hear a talk on architecture by William Tschung at a morning meeting planned for Monday at the home of Mrs. J. F. Bauder, 1695 Tigertail Rd., Coconut Grove. The architect has been invited to speak by the Creative Arts Department of the Association, which is sponsoring the meeting. Mrs. Russell Williams, program chairman for the day, will be assisted by Mrs. Bauder, Mrs. Raymond Miller, Mrs. L. H. Pope and Mrs. T. W. Hagan.

Gables Club Women Set May Breakfast Date, Announce Bridge Luncheon For Monday

The Coral Gables Woman's Club names May 7th as the date of the annual May breakfast and the Columbus Hotel, Miami as the place. Installation of new officers for both the senior and junior clubs will also take place. A bridge luncheon and lecture is on the regular club program for 12:00 noon Monday. Mrs. Carl Green is chairman for the day. Reservation which end today, may be made through Mrs. Leo Brown, 4-1449. The following new members have been added to the membership rolls: Mesdames W. C. Junior D.A.R.'s Appoint Page

The junior members of the Coral Gables Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, have named Mrs. John Lyman Watts, as their page for the forthcoming May congress to be held at Constitution Hall Washington, D.C. The juniors honored Senorita Martha Lopez de Almeida, recent Brazilian beauty contest winner and her sister Julia, at the fashion show luncheon Saturday at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Also present were Senora Almeida, mother of the honorees, Mrs. Gilbert Barklow, regent of the Coral Gables chapter and Mrs. L. E. Westerdahl, senior chairman of the junior group. Saturday night the Almeida sisters and the juniors and their escorts attended the regular country club dance. The Brazilians are enroute to New York City.

Miss Julia Aileen Freels a sister of Mrs. Duval of the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club, is home from Ward Belmont College, Nashville, Tenn., spending her spring vacation.

MRS. STREET TO PRESIDE AT SALON

Mrs. Wade Livingston Street, President will preside at the salon of Mrs. John Duvall, of Coral Gables, and hostess will be Miss Bookfellow's salon to be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at Marie Tello Philip's home. Mrs. Thomas Edgeworth will present the program. Assisting the hostess will be: Mesdames Harry Marshall, Alan Connett, Charles Manfred, Wm. K. Lownsberry, Guilford Hall, David G. Koger, Walker Gibson, O. H. Charles and Pearl Safford. Miss Bertha Foster, president of the National Music Shrine to be built at Ludlam Road and Chapman Field, will discuss the project. Miss Mina Beldue Meyer, poet and author will read one of her own works, "Ode to Music" dedicated to Miss Foster, dean emeritus of the University of Miami school of Music. Others on the program include Mme. Lenander, Aileen Edgeworth and a chorus of mixed voices.

Mothers Schedule April Meetings

Mothers of pre-school age children who will one day become students at the Coral Gables Elementary School announced plans today for two April meetings. The first will be held on April 11. Guest speaker for the day will be Dr. Lester Wheeler, professor of clinical reading. The second meeting will take place April 18 and will feature a talk by Mrs. Mae Hall, school nurse. Both events will start at 1:30 P.M. On April 30 first grade classes will be closed will host open house for mothers of pre-school children and registration for youngsters starting to school in September will be conducted.
