At the Local Churches

Christian Science First Church of Christ, Scientist in Coral Gables is opposite City Hall Park. Morning service 11 a.m. Evening service, 8 p.m. Sunday School, 11 a.m. Wednesday evening 8 o-clock. "Ancient and Modern Necromancy, Alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced," is the subject of the lesson-sermon which will be read in Churches of Christ, Scientist, throughout the world on Sunday, June 1. The Golden Text is: "Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve" (Matthew 4:10). Among the citations which comprise the Lesson-Sermon is the following from the Bible: "Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings" (Psalms 140:1-4). The lesson-sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "Evil thoughts, lusts, and malicious purposes cannot go forth, like wandering pollen, from one human mind to another, finding unsuspected lodgment, if virtue and truth build a strong defence" (234:32-3). Lutheran The sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated at the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Phoenetia Avenue at East Ponce de Leon Blvd., Sunday morning at 11 o'clock in connection with the observance of the festival of the Holy Trinity. Newly confirmed members will receive their first communion at this service. Rev. C. J. Sutorius, the pastor, will preach a festival and confessional sermon on the subject: "How Can These Things Be?" The Sunday School meets next Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, providing a thorough religious instruction for all ages. The Luther League meets Sunday evening at 7 o'clock at the chapel. A new youth confirmation class is now being formed, which shall meet on Friday afternoons at 4 o'clock. Parents having children the age of 12 or older are urged to enroll them in this class, in which they shall receive thorough instruction in the doctrines of Christianity. Kindly contact the pastor immediately. An adult membership class is also being formed, providing an opportunity to review the doctrines of the Lutheran Church. Contact the pastor for details. Catholic Church of the Little Flower, 1120 Avenue Anastasia. The Rev. Thomas Comber, pastor. Sunday masses, 6:30, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 a.m. Daily mass 6:30 and 8:30 (Convent chapel). Confessions Saturday, 4 to 5 and 7:30 to 9 p.m. Baptisms at 4 p.m. (by appointment only). Country Club Christian "Jesus Passeth By," is the message of the 11 o'clock morning worship service at the Country Club Christian Church, 1009 East Ponce de Leon Boulevard (worshipping in the Women's Club building, adjoining the Public Library) Coral Gables. "If the gospel of Jesus Christ is a thing of words and names only, of theories and creeds, a mere text for endless sermons—who wants it? Let it go. Life is too real, too short, too tragic, too awful, for any such trifling. Let the dead preacher bury the dead Gospel, and himself with it, if he will. But if there is a power that can uplift and heal men, that can end the misery and bitterness, make room for it. All hail the power of Jesus name, there is such a power! Jesus of Nazareth passeth by," observes the Rev. Mr. Fritsch. Holy Communion will be observed. The music committee, Mr. Roland E. Duppert, Sr., chairman and choir leader, announces that Eugene Seaward, brilliant young pianist, will be at the grand piano during the absence of Barbara Grandfield. Mr. Seaward will play "Reverie," by Debussey, for the prelude, and Mendelssohn's "March from Athalie" for the postlude. The second motion picture in the series on the life. of Saint Paul will be shown to the entire Bible School at the 10 a.m. service. "The addition of sound motion pictures in the method of teaching the Bible, has taken Bible School out of the "Have to" class and put it into the "Want to class," states Mr. Horace E. Richey, M. A. chairman of the religious education committee. Christian Endeavor meets at 6:45 p.m. The young people invite you to attend their service. First Presbyterian Dr. Nevin H. Schaaf, Pastor, First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables, will preach on the subject "Ambassadors" at the eleven o'clock Morning Worship Service, Sunday, June 1st. Music by Warren Hardman, Organist, and the Choir, directed by Beatrice Hunt, will include Handel's "Arioso;" Sullivan's Anthem "The Lost Chord;" Offertory duet, "My Redeemer Lives" (Mendelssohn), Sung by Marion McCreedy, soprano, and Mrs. Hunt, contralto; and Tours' "Postlude in C." Episcopal In St. Philip's Church next Sunday—Trinity Sunday—at 8 a.m. the members of the Confirmation Class of last Sunday will make their first Communion. Postlude — "Festival March" — Mosenthal. A NURSERY is provided every Sunday in the Parish House at 11 a.m. while the parents are attending the Service in the Church.

Local High School Seniors Asked to Weigh Army Career

Members of this year's high school graduating classes in Coral Gables still have an opportunity to get credits for a college education under the GI Bill of Rights if they enlist one day before Congress declares the war officially over, according to Captain Thomas A. Murphy, Commanding Officer, U. S. Army Recruiting Station, 302 Post Office Building, Miami, Florida. "This is one of the questions most frequently asked at the U. S. Army Recruiting Station," Captain Murphy said. "More than 1,000,000 young men are getting all, or part, of their higher education paid as a reward for their service in the Armed Forces. Thousands who never could have afforded college are getting their chance now—and many thousands more want the same opportunity. Differences Cited "But there is this difference: In order to qualify under the GI Bill of Rights now, you must enlist at least one day before Congress officially terminates the war. After he has served 90 days, he is guaranteed one year's higher education with $500 tuition and $65 per month paid for by the Government when his enlistment is over. "In addition, he gets an additional month for every month he serves prior to the official end of the war. Benefits Available "If Congress does not act to terminate the war officially before graduation time, high school seniors this year may earn some of the valuable benefits that approximately 100,000 of last year's classes are now earning. "1947 graduates," Captain Murphy said, "will be the first since 1940 who have not faced Selective Service. Their attitude toward military service will be entirely voluntary. But we believe that a great many of them will decide to help their Army meet its world-wide obligations by enlisting and getting the good pay, traveling, training, and the opportunity to qualify for Officer Candidate School now available. In order to maintain an Army of 1,070,000 men, according to a recent statement by General Eisenhower, the Army must continue to get about 30,000 volunteers every month.

The University of Miami is approved by the Department of Education of the State of New York.
