Committee Heads Named By Tutan
Standing committee chairmen of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce for this fiscal year were announced yesterday by Charles B. Tutan, president. Each chairman will be asked to name his own committee and to make selections from members expressing interest in his particular field of work. All members were circularized this week, through "Trade Winds," the chamber's monthly bulletin, as to their interests. A. A. Renuart Jr. will head a new committee for development of the industrial section of Coral Gables. According to Tutan, this phase of work will be emphasized this year. Officers of the Chamber of Commerce will compose the executive and budget committees, with Tutan chairman of executive and George A. Chatfield, treasurer, the budget chairman. F. N. Holley Jr., was named chairman of advertising and publicity projects committee. Civic projects and improvements will be studied by a committee headed by Roy Page. Among current projects are off-street parking, beautification, street signs and city markers. A new sports committee which will oversee all suggested sports projects, recommended by sub-committees on various sports, will be named by William H. Merriam, chairman. Current subjects include possibility of having Coral Gables represented at summer circuit tennis tournaments; proposal for a women's open golf tournament; and an AAU state swimming meet to be held here. Another new committee will undertake the welcoming new businesses to Coral Gables. Byron A. Sperow will name a large group of representative businessmen who will call on new firms. Leland Shepard and L. J. "Dan" Boone will be co-chairmen of membership contact and promotion. Carroll S. Daniels heads a new Better Business committee which will study complaints made against local business firms. W. D. Fuller will name a Public Affairs committee which will study proposed local, state and national legislation and will cooperate with other civic groups on legislative matters. James A. Henderson, chairman of education for the chamber, also will head a by-laws committee which will recommend changes to be made. The Citizens Tax committee will be named within a few days by Tutan. The Merchants Bureau will elect its own chairman at a reorganization meeting in the near future.
Gables Student Is Named to Gator Honor Group
C. W. Brand of Coral Gables was one of 19 engineering students at the University of Florida who were initiated into Sigma Tau, national honorary engineering fraternity at a meeting of the Upsilon chapter in Gainesville last week.
Miss Walton Taking Special Navy Course
Lt. Comdr. Maude S. Walton, Navy Nurse Corps, of Coral Gables, is completing a nine-month course of study in teaching and ward administration at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, N. Y. The course is a new, enlarged program of study in post-graduate nursing specialties. Miss Walton has been a member of the Navy Nurse Corps since November 4, 1941. She is a graduate of the Emory University, Ga.
Johnny Jones Buys Frozen Food Store
Purchase of the Cold Spot Frosted Foods business at 1813 Ponce de Leon Boulevard by Johnny Jones was announced this week.

City Manager Is Named to Course Staff
City Manager William T. McIlwain has been named a member of the staff for the University of Florida's short course in city management it was announced today by Dean B. C. Riley of the General Extension Division which will conduct the course. The course, which will be taken by city managers from the majority of Florida towns will be given on the Gainesville campus June 12 to 14. Clarence E. Ridley of Chicago, director, International City Managers association, eminent student of municipal government, a city manager before entering the field of municipal research with the National Institute of Public Administration in 1927, will head a group of discussion leaders which will include Florida city managers, university consultants and municipal finance specialists. The course is sponsored by the Florida State City Managers association of which George J. Roark, Pensacola, is president, Carlton F. Sharpe, St. Petersburg, vice-president, and C. Lawton McCall, Miami Shores, secretary-treasurer. Discussions will center on municipal finances, administration and personnel problems. Other members of the short course staff are Walter Bartholomew, city manager, Cocoa; R. G. Danner, Miami city manager, a former FBI official; C. H. Donovan, Roland Eutsler, Lewis A. Gaitanis, John S. Henderson and James G. Richardson, of the College of Business Administration, and E. Dovell, of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Florida; Lt. W. E. Hurlburt, director, police training, Jacksonville; Francis B. McGarry, director of finance, West Palm Beach; A. Clarence O'Neill, director of finance, Gainesville; Giles Patterson, Jacksonville attorney and municipal finance specialist; George J. Roark, Pensacola city manager; Carlton F. Sharpe, St. Petersburg city manager; M. N. Yancey, Tallahassee city manager.

Dates of the Miss Florida Pageant sponsored by the Florida State Junior Chamber of Commerce have been changed to June 1-2 at St. Petersburg. Attractive girls from all sections of the state sponsored by local Jaycee clubs will compete for the title of Miss Florida and an opportunity to represent this state at the Atlantic City Miss America contest.
Guthrie Buys Hobby Shop
David E. Guthrie has purchased the Tropical Hobby Shop at 141 Avenue Alcazar, it was announced today. Former owner of the local business was Augustus Jacob, Jr. Guthrie was commissioned a captain in the Air Corps in 1942 and entered on active duty in February of that year. He served with the Air Service Command, AAF Technical Training Command and the Twelfth Tactical Air Command. In Germany Following service in the states he was sent to Germany with the Army of Occupation, was promoted to colonel in November, 1946, and relieved from active duty in January, 1947. Guthrie came to Coral Gables in March and his family joined him from Charleston, W. Va., on May 1. Prior to the war he resided in Richmond, Va., and was manager of Richmond Air Transport, operators of Byrd Municipal Airport.
The Shark Oil Co. was recently organized in Clewiston by Dr. G. E. Gerishe, former chief chemist for the United States Sugar Corp. The concern will carry on the work of catching sharks in the Gulf and processing the oil.
