Poinciana Idea Was Started Here

(Continued from Page One) J. Payne, then chairman of the civic affairs committee of the Miami Chamber of Commerce. He invited Mrs. Lassiter and Mr. Street to appear before the committee on July 6, 1937, and the three were appointed by the Miami Chamber of Commerce to foster tree planting, motoreades to see the trees, and eventually an annual festival. Date Set It was July 20, 1937, that Mayor E. G. Sewell of Miami proclaimed as the first Royal Poinciana tree planting day and many trees were planted. Motorcades were formed to visit the famous Killian tree at Kendall, Fla. Mr. Street was chairman of the Poinciana celebrations 1937, '38 and '39. During these early years Mrs. Lassiter earned for herself the title, Poinciana Lady, so dubbed by Dr. John David Fairchild and Mrs. Porter Baldwin, president of the Florida Garden Club. It was in 1940 that John Hall, then president of the Miami Chamber of Commerce, named Mrs. Murray Forbes Wittichen as festival chairman. It was then under her leadership that the first weeklong celebration was held, the first Poinciana Queen chosen and a coronation program given in Bayfront Park amphitheatre. Mrs. Wittichen was general festival chairman for three years, planning colorful programs and using casts of 800 to 1,000. Idea Fostered During the war years of 1943, '44 and '45, the City of Miami recreation department was asked to keep alive the festival movement and coronation programs were held in the park under the direction of Tom O. Smith, Mrs. T. V. Moore and Joe Mason. In 1946 Major Payne appointed Mrs. John W. Hunt as general chairman for the first post-war festival and suggested that a group of civic leaders of Greater Miami incorporate the festival which was done on April 16, 1946, shortly after Major Payne's death. At this time Clyde A. Epperson was appointed by the Miami Chamber of Commerce to assist with the festival and he became treasurer at the first annual meeting of the directors on June 9, 1946. Week Celebration A week of elaborate entertainments including coronation program, fashion show, songfest, art exhibit and garden tours with the Queens Ball and introduction of another leading figure in the pageantrv, Princess Floriana was chosen from Barry College students. This year the addition of a water carnival at beautiful Venetian Pools will give further interest to the week's program which

Quick Action Predicted on Biscayne Key

Cables will lose only that part of the key that lies within the county park, and city officials had previously expressed no objection to that portion being excluded. The southern portion of the Key, owned jointly by the Matheson interests, the Deering estate and a group of Cuban investors, represented by Kenneth Keyes, has been described as the last ocean-front "frontier" in the area and city officials envisage a building program of large homes and hotels on the 15,000 building sites there. Visits North Carolina Mrs. Jessica O. Goodenow of Coral Gables and Virginia, is planning a stay of several months in the mountains near Midway Park, Jacksonville, N. C. Healy, flew to Tallahassee and conferred with other members of the Dade delegation. A telegram, signed by all persons attending the Sunday meeting, was also sent to Tallahassee. Under the amended bill, Coral opens June 1 with a Royal Poinciana Regatta, also a new festival feature, at Pelican Harbor, 79th street causeway. The coronation program, art exhibit, tree award, Queen's Ball will follow in the week's activities.
