GROVE GIRL CHOSEN FOR GIRL'S STATE
Helen Hagler, student in Ponce de Leon High School, has been selected by Lindley De Garmo Unit No. 70, of the American Legion Auxiliary to attend the Florida Girls' State, to be held at Florida State College for Women, Dale Mabry Field, Tallahassee, Florida, July 14th to 19th. Selection of Helen Hagler, who is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. A. D. Hagler, was announced today by Mrs. Damon Archer, girls' state chairman of the Auxiliary Unit. The selection was based upon the following qualifications: leadership, character, courage, honesty, scholarship, and cooperativeness. At Girls' State Helen will join girls similarly selected from high schools throughout Florida in establishing and operating a mythical state of their own. They will form political parties, hold an election for governor and other state offices, conduct a session of a state legislature, and operate all the executive, legislative and judicial functions of a democratic state. Girls' State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary to provide citizenship training for girls of high school age. This gives them an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens and to participate in the actual functioning of the government. It helps them grasp the meaning of the responsibilities they must assume, as American citizens, when they become adults. Two girls will be selected from the Florida Girls' State to attend Girls' Nation in Washington sometime in August. The next meeting of the unit will be held at the Legion Home in Coconut Grove on June 3, at which time Jessie Gwin, president, will stress the importance of everyone displaying the American flag on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14th.
