Historical Association Sets Time and Place for June Meet
The Historical Association of South Florida will hold its 24th program meeting at 8 p.m. June 6th in the main theatre of the University of Miami, 515 University Drive. Gerald G. Parker, United States District Geologist will be the speaker of the evening. His topic, "Geological and Cultural Development of the Everglades", a timely subject, now that the great dream of a National Park appears a reality. Author of 22 published scientific and technical reports and papers dealing with various phases of the geology and ground water of southern Florida, or areas in southern Florida, Mr. Parekr will tell of the prehistoric birth of the Everglades, how natural and man made agencies have seriously affected the water table and what the U. S. Geological survey is doing to aid in protecting the later. The U. S. Geological Survey prepares and publishes reports on the geology and mineral and water resources of the United States, Alaska, and Hawaii; classifies lands (public) as to their mineral and power value; supervises technical phases of mineral leasing on public lands and, using aerial photographs extensively, prepares and publishes topographic quadrangle maps of the United States. The Ground Water Division functions in the State of Florida in continuous studies to determine the depth, extent, and hydrologic characteristics of the underground water-bearing rocks. These studies are made in cooperation with the Florida Geological Survey and with several municipalities and county governments. Ground water studies are especially important in the State of Florida because over 92 percent of the municipal supplies are derived from wells.

Stuart Clark will entertain for her daughter, Miss Ella Clark and Miss Clark's attendants at her forth coming marriage, with a luncheon Saturday at the Country Club of Coral Gables. Pastel colored flowers, the same color theme which will be used in the wedding scene, will decorate the table. Attending the luncheon will be Mrs. James Marquette, nee Betty June Cook, matron-of-honor-elect; Miss Irene Robinson, maid-of-honor-elect, and brides-bridesmaids-elect Miss Sue Harrison, Miss Betty Paige Todd and the Misses Evelyn and Barbara Zotter. The marriage of Miss Clark and Paul Andre will take place June 5th at 7:30 p.m. at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Scott Deming sailed from New Orleans Friday via the Delta Lines, for a cruise to South America. Former Coral Gables residents for about 12 years, the Demings spent last winter in California. * * * A farewell to the business world is being made this week by Anna Marie Raymond, who with her husband, the well-known artist-architect, W. Oakley Raymond, is returning to their home, 731 University Concourse about July first. Mrs. Raymond conducted the Anna Marie shop for a number of years in their own building, 210-212 Avenue Giralda. A creative milliner, Mrs. Raymond first made her name with handpainted straw hats, but her and bags made of coco fibre were also well received and she was among the first to put this pliable material to use. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond were among the first members of the Century Club of Coral Gables and their parties and tea dantsants they gave for the club, both at their previous home, 3600 Granada Boulevard and at the University Concourse home which they have not occupied for ten years, will bring back memories. Mrs. Raymond will be busy unpacking her lovely antiques and readying them against moving day. Her only regret is leaving the many friends she made; "real friends," she says, when she sewed and painted hats in the "Anna Marie."

Baby Time Hostess Joins Gables Welcome Wagon Group
New Residents Receive Calls, Flowers and Gifts from Merchants Mrs. F. W. Hirt has joined the group of Coral Gables hostesses for the Welcome Wagon as the "Baby Time" hostess. Other Coral Gables hostesses are Mrs. J. Guy Finn in charge of "Brides," and Mrs. H. O. Johnson, supervisor. The recently organized Newcomers Club of Coral Gables is an outgrowth of new residents being warmly welcomed by the various Coral Gables hostesses bearing gifts from merchants. Mrs. Johnson is returning this week from New York City where she attended the annual Welcome Wagon convention. "Planning for tomorrow" was the theme of the convention, which was held in honor of representatives and hostesses who have been associated with Welcome Wagon for ten years or more. Welcome Wagon was established by Thomas W. Briggs in Memphis, Tenn., in 1928. It now operates in 1000 cities in the United States and Canada. Its name is derived from the covered wagon that put out from frontier settlements to welcome pioneers making their way towards a new life in a new land. Welcome Wagon's hostesses are chosen with extreme care after a check of commercial, social, and church references. Preferable they are long-time residents in the community, Mr. Briggs, likes to think of each hostess as truly representatives of her town. Ranging in age from thirty to forty five, they must own and drive a car and be able to type — at least with one finger. Invariably they are married or widowed; they inspire more confidence when they have been "through the mill." The successful applicants are given an intensive two-week training course in Memphis, or New York. Through demonstrations and dramatized lectures they are coached to meet various situations. Everyone covers the same fundamentals and then receives specialized instruction in a particular field, as either a Newcomer, a Bride, a House Warming, or a Baby hostess. All four type hostesses carry lovely baskets of gifts from the merchants of their city or community with letters of welcome or congratulations from the Mayor and Chamber of Commerce. But the Baby Baskets really take the bun. Often the basket itself is a bassinet — with the compliments of the furniture store. A dress shop sends a baby dress; jeweler a silver spoon; the bank does itself proud with an inscribed white leather baby bank; a department store provides a rubberized sheet for the crib; the dairy a miniature vacuum bottle to keep milk hot or cold. The News paper will give a lovely scrap book with the clipping of the birth announcement pasted in on the first page. This conglomeration is topped off by three toys, a corsage for mo-ther, and a card on the men's shop for father. Mr. Briggs, believes baby calls so important that Welcome Wagon has launched a separate organization called "Baby Time." The Baby Time hostess is a clever woman. Like other alert and busy people, she budgets her hours as she budgets her cash. This is one of the qualities that make her valuable; for she not only renews the bond of friendship with people she has already contacted, but also picks up news and suggestions about others. Perhaps a timid soul longs for a church affiliation but hasn't the courage to push herself into a strange group, or a young mother, alone and frightened, needs information about local doctors and hospitals. Whatever the situation, Welcome Wagon hostess to the rescue all free.
