CORAL GABLES Country Clubber

By GORDON TAYLOR Managing Editor Jim Moore says, "Gordon, you've got to write your own Country Clubber this week as my skilled young ladies are graduating." So, it looks like I'm hooked! And after we did our best to entertain Mary at the Club while Jim was cavorting with the Navy for two weeks! I'd say it was poor appreciation. There are so many interesting things they want to do this summer that I feel caught in a mad social whirl—much to the neglect of my usual worrying about the high cost of food, the outlooks for the Scotch market this fall (which is bad) and what new things we can keep giving the business men for their luncheons. P.S.—What do they want? Theatre Group Just to enumerate a few items on the agenda, to show you what I mean, we'll start with the Theatre Group. Their new selection of a play is a dilly of a comedy called "Ladies of the Jury," by Fred Ballard. July 1st and 2nd are the scheduled nights of presentation, which gives all you members a chance to get your hand into all that fun. Sid Cassell tells me he needs men—and women. They plan to throw a party for all concerned after this play that should be a humdinger. He wants to change the complete cast for this show, including those heroes behind the scenes. Our next fashion show will be fashioned by professional models of our own club, headed by Carol Campbell who did such a swell job in the Junior Women's Show. June 14 is the date. Gamblers I hope the Juniors who tried out for the state golf tournament at Granada this week were not unduly influenced by the dyed in the wool gamblers of be a hole like a few Franks we all know. Throw in a "Harry," if you wish. At least they didn't get poisoned from the sandwiches we furnished their eager stomachs. Ann Randolph wouldn't be happy with less than $100 for prizes for our lady golfers during their annual tournament for the Martin trophy. I think she and Mary Belle Macy had it all cooked up because that's what the women's tennis tournament prizes came to. There's something about those brown legs from brief shorts that peps up the atmosphere around here. We just hope that when Marta Barnett, our champ, and Jean Crazy, our hopeful, hit the bigtime of Forest Hills tennis that they'll register from CORAL GABLES. Not So Smart Seems like we ain't very smart when we keep crowning our champs every year and leaving them with trophies no one ever sees. A good, true and loyal member has been approached about heading a committee to plan our yearly tournament schedule a year in advance with the ultimate aim of establishing a hall of fame in our hallowed walls. When little ones see their Momie's and Daddies's names on plaques and trophies in their favorite hang-out, you can be sure they cherish the memories when they grow up and bring their children around for a little gaping. More about that chairman and his duties later. There's talk about barbecuing with a professional flourish in the patio this summer. Wonder who could have started that rumor? The same source mentions costume parties, fish fries, new menus, a kitchen second to none around, and big (and I mean big!!) plans for the alcoholic beverage department. Bridge Devotees When more rabid devotes to bridge are found we'll produce them. The following winners are very sharp and I know because I have stuck my nose into enough of their games to get my ears in their close-to-the-head-effect without the benefit of safety pins. Honors in the bridge tournament ending May 16th go to C. F. Tweed 1st place, J. N. Ammen for 2nd place, Lillian Ammen for 3rd place, and last but not least, Al Eigie for 4th place. Duplicate winners Monday, May 26th were Mrs. Isabel Chapman and Mrs. Leo Luck Brown for North-South and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tawes for East-West. A well thought out, honee complaint shows interest in OUR Club and the progress shown in member comforts all came from complaints. My closing witticism is: You dish it out and I'll take it! PONCE NEWS AND NOTES Senior Class Activities Dominate Ponce Campus

BY BETTY NEWMAN With honor and pride, the Ponce Tribune added another award to the huge collection held by David McDonald, Ponce's senior class president, athletic hero, and man of all work. The Tribune announced yesterday that David had won its player of the year title. Each issue of the Tribune designated a player of the week and the final issue crowns the player of the year. Anyone who knows Dave knows why he was unanimously chosen for this title. He has been outstanding in athletics, school politics and is generally known to be a "grand guy." With his little red jeep and his little gal, Suzie, Big Mac has been around the campus for the past few years cracking corny jokes and becoming the idol of all the worshipping underclassmen. He will go to the University of Miami next year on a full football scholarship. All of Ponce wishes him all the luck in the world. Clubs Elect In the flurry of last minute jobs, the various clubs and organizations around this campus are busily elected officers to head them next year. Beta Club, national girls' service club, chose Jeanette Watters as president, Eve Vance, vice president; Betty George, secretary; Anna Topping, treasurer; Ann Simpson, chaplain, and Betty Jo Miller, sergeant-at-arms. The club plans to prepare a calendar for next year's activities so that any events which they may plan will not coincide with plans made by other school organizations. Other work they expect to do next year has not been decided definitely but they have discussed a possible orientation assembly for incoming students, and their usual work of aiding teachers with extra work. In the year that Beta has been organized, its member girls have served more than 2000 hours in service to the school, community and nation. This is an excellent record for such a new group, or for any group for that matter. Get New Uniforms The Ponce Cavallettes, that well-known drill team made up of lovely Ponce lassies have chosen their leaders for next year also and Dot McNeilis will act as their president for next year. Dot in also in line for possible editorship of Ye Ponce School paper, the Tribune. Joanne Crowder will act as whistle-blower and drill captain extraordinary. Betty June Brown will be recording secretary; Betty Jane Matthews corresponding secretary; Elinor Hussman, treasurer; Sally Peacock, sergeant-at-arms. When the flashy Cavallettes step out on the gridiron between halves next season, they will glitter in glamorous new uniforms. Look for a real show from these lassies. Celebrate Class Day Flowery hats, fancy dresses and lovely faces sparked the annual class day exercises held at Gables' auditorium last Tuesday afternoon. In a glorified fashion show, the senior class marched across the stage to the words of the class prophecy. The class gift, money for ice water fountains to be placed in the new school, was presented to Principal H. N. Rath by Earle Peoples, head of the gift committee. The class play, starring Barbara Brown, Doug Phillips and Carol Gulliver, was a success in spite of its tradition-breaking start. The hero kisses the heroine in the first minute! Shocking! "Super" Describes Banquet The Senior banquet, with the most impressive table decoration ever seen at this affair, was held immediately afterwards at the Coral Gables Country Club. The decorations were really super. Using the theme of "Memories of the South," and the class colors of gold and brown, the tables were covered with strips of brown crepe paper, yellow marigold, and masses of fragrant gardines.
