Touch of Tahiti Lends Lazy Atmosphere To Coral Gables' Only Cabana Colony

By AUDREY GELB A touch of Tahiti fulfilled George T. Merrick's dream of a tropical haven for Coral Gables bathers which still stands amid all its romantic atmosphere, and is the only cabana colony in the Gables. Tahiti Beach, at the end of Granada Boulevard along Biscayne Bay, was designed exclusively for Coral Gables residents. George Merrick's artistic hand conjured the cabana colony as an oasis of relaxation and enjoyment, and he accomplished the true atmosphere by carrying out the south sea island theme of architecture. The three-hundred yards of beach front are interrupted only by small huts which mock native South sea habitats. Their sloping roofs are thatched with dried cabbage palm fronds nailed onto the wooden planks, Fiji style. Each of these tropical shelters provides a table and benches ideal for picnic lunches. There are also two barbecue pits available for afternoon and evening parties and private parties. A large stand at the entrance to the beach club provides a variety of refreshments for fresh air appetites. This stand is flanked on both sides by the eight cabanas that make up the colony. Having put in their bids early the following Gableites will occupy cabanas this summer: Dr. and Mrs. Sidney Cassel, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Hodge, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Poole, R. P. Elliott, Hart Morris and family, James Buddington and family, Kenneth Kimball, Frank H. Evans, Mrs. Joe Williams, William H. Mitchell, Dr. Oden A. Schaeffer and family and Charles Hamilton and family. With a twelve year history behind it, the cabana club has survived two hurricanes with only minor damage. The club is now owned and managed by Paul U. Gerber. Formerly with Thompson and McKinnon, stock brokers, Gerber prefers his outdoor life to office work. He is out on the beach at 8:30 a.m. and stays throughout the day and sometimes on into the night. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Allen, in charge of maintenance, occupy a trailer on the premises. Bob Heddinger, the Tahiti Beach life guard, is an ex air corps man and has been with Gerber since December.

Ponce Seniors Ranked High In State Test

Superiority of Ponce de Leon High School students over students in other schools in the state are revealed in the results of tests taken by Ponce seniors under the "High School Testing Program", Principal Harry N. Rath stated this week. The tests were given under the supervision of the University of Florida to all graduating seniors in the state. "The Percentile rank shows each senior's rank in each subject with respect to other high school seniors," Rath explained. "For example, a Percentile of 50 indicates performance on the test equivalent to that of the average high school senior this spring. Percentile ranks of 1-20 denote inferior preparation while 8-80 denotes excellent preparation." In the Ponce ranking 69 per cent of the Coral Gables students were above the average of the state in the psychological examination; 80 per cent in English; 67 per cent in social studies; 66 per cent in natural science and 63 per cent in mathematics.

'U' Alumni Name Pomeroy As President

Richard S. Pomeroy III was re-elected to serve his second consecutive term as president of the University of Miami Alumni Association Friday night. Career As A Manager Followed By Fred Smith

Always managing things, but never participating in them, is the life story of J. Fred Smith, 915 Avenue Castile, general manager of the new Riviera Country Club. In fact, ever since his school days, Mr. Smith "managed." First it was school publications and activities, and finally country clubs. Even today, with surroundings consisting of a golf course, a swimming pool, and tennis courts Smith is still the "manager", not the participant. From Columbus Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Smith wandered to Orlando, Florida, under orders, as a member of the Army Air Force, in 1942. And it seems he's been here ever since. Following his Army separation in February 1946, he decided to come further South, and finally settled in Coral Gables. Gables Is Beautiful "Coral Gables is certainly a beautiful city," said Mr. Smith. "I particularly like the way Gableites keep their beautiful homes up, and the friendly community spirit." As for the housing problem, Mr. Smith has nothing to worry about—until December 1, anyway, when his present lease expires. Ohio Graduate Smith is a graduate of Ohio State University, where he majored in business administration. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity in college. Prior to his Army career, he was manager of the Columbus Country Club; and also the University Club, composed of university graduates from the various colleges. As secretary of the National Club Manager's Association for three years, he visited about 600 country clubs from New York to San Francisco. To see how the various Clubs operate in the different sections of the country was the purpose of his trip.

Prom to Honor Ponce Graduates

Honoring the graduating class, Ponce de Leon's junior class will present the annual junior-senior prom in the patio of the Coral Gables Country Club after graduation exercises June 6. "Traditionally, there's so heavy a Florida dew on the night of the prom that we have to dance inside, but we'll break tradition this year if I have to bribe the water man," promises Leith Kent, junior class president. Although this year only juniors and seniors will be admitted without tickets, juniors, seniors, and Ponce alumni are eligible to ask dates as usual. Tickets, which are being sold by the junior class for a dollar apiece, will be required for alumni, dates from under-classes, and dates from outside Ponce. Leading candidates thus far for King and Queen of the prom are Doris Parrish and Ray Pierce. Each home room elected a boy and girl to run, and until the virtual hour of coronation, students may support their candidates at a penny per vote. "Naturally, we'll have Cy Washburn's Orchestra, and naturally we'll decorate the club in the senior class colors—brown and gold," adds Leith.

Waste time is living that is unrelated to the nation's need.
