Leland Pluto Is Promoted To Police Sergeant Here

The Coral Gables Police Department has a new sergeant. He is 34-year-old Leland J. Pluto, of 9801 Dominican Dr., Cutler Ridge. Pluto, who worked as a plainclothesman with the detective bureau until last year, nosed out six other policemen who passed all phases of the examinations. Fourteen other officers passed the written test, but fell by the wayside on other examinations and qualifications. A total of 21 officers took the tests. The six who made the certification list — a list from which the next sergeant will probably come — are Charles W. Skalaski, Robert F. Faidley, Carl J. Fieler, Richard A Harrington, William J. Bennett and George J. Limbey. High scorer Pluto joined the force nearly six years ago on May 16, 1954. The Hopwood, Pa., native is a high school graduate and a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman. Pluto has two children, Timothy, 10, and Kimberly, 7. SGT. PLUTO

CIVIL DEFENSE

A civil defense class will be conducted at Coral Gables Youth Center April 21 and 28. The class is open to all persons 13 years and up, and will last for two hours, 8:30-10:30 p.m. Contact Mrs. C. E. Lawrence at HI 3-0347 (days) or MO 5-2691 (evenings).

Gables Realtors Ready To Spruce Up Town

A spruce-up-clean-up campaign, talks and films, luncheons, TV program and radio panel program will highlight Realtor Week in Coral Gables April 23-29. The week — a national event originated by Miamian Arthur B. Boazman — will be kicked off Sunday with week-long tidy up campaign. The spruce-up-clean-up campaign launched Sunday will be followed by a talk and film April 21 before Rotary; April 24, talks at Coral Gables High School and Elks Club; April 26, talk and film, Lions Cub.
