Gables High Wins State Debate Meet
Coral Gables High School debaters virtually walked away with all the honors during the weekend's National Forensic League state championship held in Sarasota. The Gables team, led by Daphne Vzars, won the sweepstakes trophy and overall point plaque. Rick Schuster, of 1209 Obispo, and Steve Magida, of 2253 SW 34th Ave., placed first and will compete in the national tournament scheduled for Pittsburgh in June. They will be accompanied by Betsy Warren, 310 Palmwood Lane, Key Biscayne, first in the girl's extemporaneous speaking. Ronald Jacobson, 5236 SW 64th Ave., first in boy's extemporaneous and Stan Friedberg, 5845 Twin Lakes Dr., humorous interpretation winner. Thousand dollar scholarships to the University of Miami were won by Allan Dinsmore, of 8121 SW 63rd Ct., and Elliot of 8450 SW 43rd Ct.
Brinkman Will Head Gables Republicans
Robert L. Brinkman, 1314 Salzedo St., has been elected president of the Men's Republican Club of Coral Gables. Brinkman, a retired mortician and presently president of the Coral Gables Apartment Owners Assn., came here about 10 years ago from St. Petersburg. Other officers elected were Gilbert Smith, 666 University Dr., first vice president; Orvis C. Yingling, 2109 Country Club Prado, second vice president, Edwin L. Richards, 6431 SW 33rd St., secretary; and Martin Rittenhouse Jr., 4515 San Amaro Dr., treasurer. Bill Bayers, Miami television news analyst, will be guest speaker at the club's installation banquet to be held at 8 p.m. Monday, at Coral Gables Country Club. The club's objects for the coming year, according to Brinkman, are increased membership in the Coral Gables club, a committee to urge more Republican registrations, an efficient telephone committee, a joint precinct organization of men and women and more periodical meetings of Dade's Republican clubs. The club also plans to procure able and qualified Republicans to run for local, state and national offices.

New Flag Is Donated
A new "Old Glory" now waves at the Coral Gables Woman's Club and Library building. The new flag with its 50 stars was the gift of the Coral Gables Junior Woman's Club. It was unfurled Monday, April 17, Citizenship Day, as proclaimed by President Kennedy. Courtland and Warren Lewis, young sons of Mrs. Weldon Lewis, immediate past president of the Juniors' participated in the Boy Scout ritual of raising a new flag and retiring the old one.
82-Year-Old Pastor Is Here for Baptism
Mr. and Mrs. William Charlton, 5537 Sardinia Ave., have as their guest, the Rev. Dr. William C. Ney of Havertown, Pa. Dr. Ney is the stepfather of Mr. Charlton. He is pastor emeritus of the Temple Lutheran Church in Havertown. He is 82 years old. Dr. Ney is here to baptize his great grandson, Brian Scott Hunter. Brian is the four-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Hunter, 5904 San Vincente Ave. Dr. Ney officiated at the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Charlton, grandparents of the child. He also baptized their three children, Joy (Mrs. Hunter), William Charlton Jr. and Kerry. Mr. and Mrs. Charlton became grandparents three times during the year 1960 when each of their three children had babies. That made a total of five children under two and a half years of age at Christmas time. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter have two other sons, Charlton Lee, 11 and Steven Kent, eight.

Parking is no longer a serious problem for those who drive to school. A large parking area has been provided just north of the school building. The school is also ideally located for students relying upon bus transportation. Counselors are on duty from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday to help students plan their educational programs. Reginald L. Williams, Miami attorney who is president of the Florida Bar, will address the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club Monday. Representing the Dade County Bar Association, Williams will outline the 1961 observance of Law Day, U.S.A., before the group, which meets at the Gables Country Club.
