If you haven't met Mary Miller, the "adjutant general" of the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center, you should. Mary adjusts the playtime lives of some 100 children who swarm the place after school each day and all day Saturday. The Youth Center, one of the most beautiful spots in the county with its thoughtfully-planned open and closed spaces, appeals to grownups as well as children. We were there Tuesday, election day. Games and materials for all kinds of sports are provided. Basketball is in the patio; a room with ping pong and pool tables is popular. Junior high boys, 13 years and over, are welcome to play pool, Mary said. "It's far better to welcome them here than at a public place." Also popular are tether ball and knok-hockey. The snack bar does a thriving business, Mary said. Served are hot dogs, pizza and hot soups. MISS MILLER We sat talking with Eleanor Anderson and Edith Rowe in one of the many wide comfortable benches in the patio. We sat in the middle and heard everything discussed from love to high taxes. Maylen Newby Pierce said as she passed us: "I went to the Girl Scout House - wrong place - here I always vote." There seemed to be more children playing there, than grown folks voting. But it was 4 p.m. and the rush (for voting) comes later. Avhlee (Mrs. George) Dempsey would rather sit at home for the next month, but she promised her son, Dr. John Hammach, on the staff at Walter Reed Hospital, she would keep house for him during his month's vacation in Europe. He was home recently and while here invited Dr. Marguerite Lines, also on the hospital staff down for a week. Marguerite, a French Canadian, had never been in Florida. She couldn't get over the fact that in mid March, you could swim in the pool, sit on the Dempseys' patio with flowers blooming all around you. The Dempseys' left this week for Washington, D.C. Mrs. Clifton D. Muir, 3804 Alhambra Cir., first vice president of the National Federation of Music Clubs, is in Kansas City this week. Mrs. Muir also visited the Texas Federated Music Clubs in official capacity. "April in Paris" is the title given to the Coral Gables Country Club's dinner dance Saturday evening. Mrs. James Garland, chairman, says there will be wandering troubadours, and Left Bank artists ready with charcoal to do portraits. There will be special dancers doing the French tango, the can-can. Even the dinner will have a French savor with Filet mignon Sernaise on the menu. Mr. and Mrs. French Sensabaugh will be special guests. Ira F. Willard Jr. and his wife are now residing at 130 Campana Ave., and Ira is working at Pan American Airways while continuing his studies at the University of Miami.
Mrs. Urban Will Play
Virginia Gaskell Urban, pianist, will present the program Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Dixie Room of the Musicians Club. Mrs. Urban made her debut in New York's Town Hall and Carnegie Hall in 1949. She was on the faculty of the Hartt College of Music, of the University of Hartford. Mrs. Urban is now a resident of Miami. This concert, as are all Sunday afternoon programs at the club, is open to the public.
