SM Merchants Want to Keep Ban

South Miami's parking meters, which haven't been in use for some four weeks, can remain in that state, according to the city's merchants. A Guide survey this week showed most merchants are still glad the meters were capped. Many want the meters left that way permanently. "We're very satisfied with the meters the way they are now," said a spokesman of Roberts Men's wear. "I think the meters hurt business and I think there is more business now that the meters have been taken from the streets," said Ralph Gimenez, in Fred Fleming's Photo studio. Of a spot survey taken of some 10 merchants, most of whom occupy stores on Sunset Drive, eight of the merchants were for permanently lifting the meters while the remaining two preferred the meters on the streets. Joe Dussault, of Dussault Stationery, said he noticed no difference in the lifting of the meters. "It was good before. It's good now," Dussault said. But he preferred the meters. South Miami Council four weeks ago voted to cap the meters at the request of the South Miami District Chamber of Commerce. The city seemed almost in a carnival spirit with the meters gone from the city's streets. The meters, however, are still being operated in South Miami's several off-street parking lots.
