From the Garden Notes and Quotes

By Madelene Hawkins "April Showers Bring May Flowers" but so far there has not been much rain. Not many flowers are in the garden but the flower hat parades are well under way. Flowered hats are everywhere; . . traditional, modern and even a few abstracts. Mrs. Philip James will speak to members of the Coral Gables Garden Club, Tuesday, on "Ferns, Native and Exotic," and Mrs. Jay Knox will do one of her creative arrangements for the club decoration. So many belong to more than one garden club, it is difficult to say which comes first. Members of West End Garden Club of which Mrs. Charles McWethy is president will have its April tour in Mrs. C. M. Ballard's beautiful Japanese Garden on Minorca Avenue. An authentic tea ceremony will be a feature of the day. Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) members postponed their workshop because of all the flower show and convention doings but will use Mrs. A. McIntosh's (Granada Boulevard) garage to practice with the scissors and pinholders. With a background of hospital administration, her garage is really spotless and the envy of all. A Gabelite, Mrs. J. W. Burdin, will be installed new president of South Miami Garden Club May 9th, so you see Garden Club members have no boundaries. Speaking of May breakfasts and chicken salad, hat parades included, the Ken-Pines Gardners with their past presidents as the planners, are keeping their program a Big Secret. Daisies won't tell but whistler's might. To be the local trash man at the Metropolitan Flower Show would have been worth a fortune - when they discarded some of those gorgeous blooms and petals that Mrs. S. M. Greene had in the Rose Room. A bouquet of thanks and appreciation to her and all of her committee for the work they have accomplished this spring in making Coral Gables, the City Beautiful, also a contender for the Rose Capital of Florida. Speaking of petals, I hope you have started your Christmas planning, for now is the time. Take a leaf from Grand-mother's notebook and make a potpourri for that certain friend that has "everything," or that special friend where only something personal will do. There are many recipes for potpourris but one of the simpliest is the following: 10 cups dried rose petals 3 oz. powdered Orris Root (from the drug store) 1/2 oz. each of cloves, cinnamon and allspice. Mix ingredients and allow to blend in a tightly covered jar. You can vary the blend to suit your taste by the addition of other herbs and spices, or dried fragrant blossoms. Between now and November you will surely find just the right porcelain jar or maybe an antique sugar bowl.

Studio M Announces Productions

Ruth Foreman announces four Studio M Playhouse productions in the Spring schedule. They are May 15, "Not By Bread Alone," Ed Seney's new play; May 20, the Pied Piper Playhouse dramusical, "Sleeping Beauty"; June 19, "Tobacco Road." Tennessee William's "Rose Tattoo," directed by Richard Paul Janaro with Ruth Foreman in the Anna Magnani role is to be a July production.

Methodists Will Build

The Rev. Ralph B. Huston, pastor of the First Methodist Church of South Miami, has announced plans for a $250,000 building fund campaign. The First Methodist Church of South Miami, which has been a landmark in our community for 47 years, will seek funds to erect a new sanctuary in keeping with the present growth of the church and anticipated future needs. The membership roster lists 1,600. The leaders of a campaign task force of 155 are being selected. Warren Smyth is chairman of the building committee.
