15 Cartageneros See How We Live, Thanks to Gables Residents
By JOE MORRIS Correspondent To give a foreigner an idea how an American family really lives - how would you entertain him in your home? This is the way some Gableites did it last Tuesday for 15 Cartageneros here on a student exchange program. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mantinan, 2330 S.W. 82nd Ave., in addition to escorting the entire group in a Coral Gables city bus to the Seaquarium earlier in the day, teamed with Chick and Joyce Willard, 660 Campana Ave., for a chicken barbecue and then a Cha Cha party. The four Cartageneros guests offered to teach the Americans the Colombia "Cumbia" in exchange for lessons in Rock and Roll. Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Kerdyk, 3105 Coconut Grove Dr., and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Wheeling, 527 Savona, had a hamburger cookout at Key Colony Club for their visitors, Dr. and Mrs. Manuel Antonio Bermudez, the group's chaperone, and two fourth-year medical students. Most families reported that the difficulties of language acted as a common ground rather than a barrier as both the guests and the hosts tried out their respective English and Spanish. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hartnett, 4410 Monserrate, entertained one dental and one pharmaceutical student with a steak dinner while Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Jones served their two engineering students with roast beef and potato salad then gave them a dish they did not recognize - rice and gravy. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Morris, 8445 S.W. 54th Ct. served a steak dinner to their male guest while attending to their young lady visitor's 102-degree temperature according to Dr. Ken Cole's orders. Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Gregory, 728 Catalonia Ave., took their two guests for a boat ride in Biscayne Bay then chicken barbecued right along with a record playing evening's entertainment. Dr. and Mrs. Ralph S. Boggs, 536 Altara Ave., prepared a baked ham and arroz con pollo so the two young people in their home would be able to compare a North and South American dish. Dr. Boggs, international director at the University of Miami originated the student exchange program with the University of Cartagena in Cartagena, Colombia. From July 30 through Aug. 5, 15 UM students will visit Cartagena, Colombia, to see how the citizens of that city live. Their leader will be Dr. J. Riis Owre, dean of the graduate school and professor of Spanish, accompanied by his wife. Wednesday night the Cartagena visitors were entertained with a dinner at the Coral Gables Country Club by the People to People Committee. The group leaves for home Sunday.
MEMBERS OF THE CORAL Gables People-to-People Program greet visiting students from the University of Cartagena at a reception at the University of Miami Student Union Sunday. Left to right are Ira F. Willard, Francisco Montana, Carlos Escobar, Warren Blackmon, Lucille Neher, Betty Vimos and Robert Kingsley.
