Mr. Crowley's Project / It Was a Rosy Afternoon For Launching This Idea
Mr. Crowley's Project It Was a Rosy Afternoon For Launching This Idea I don't know who might have been praying for rain last Saturday but I can tell them they never had a chance. H. A. Crowley, who had planned a fancy, lawn-party-type opening for his new Ponce Seed Store, had been making silent supplications for several weeks for a pretty Saturday. He was well rewarded. It was a lovely afternoon. An ornery-looking storm cloud did come up about 3 o'clock but it soon scudded south. Crowley had more than a normal commercial interest in the afternoon's affairs. True, he was celebrating a new location on Almeria just west of Ponce de Leon. It was the reward of 41⁄2 years' success in his first location. REAL REASON But he was excited about a related project, which he was dovetailing into his opening. It is his feeling that the University of Miami and the City of Coral Gables need to get closer together. Through the medium of his guest list, he resolved to make it so. And they came. From ordinary folks like newspaper editors up to Mayor Searle and University academicians. As further social lubrication, Crowley had thoughtfully provided Betty Lee Taylor at the organ and a hospitable bar that dispensed your choice in refreshment. There even was an off-duty policeman to put nickles in the parking meter for you in case you tarried too long in the garden at the rear of Crowley's store. ROSES FAVORITE Crowley's real love is roses. It was no surprise to find him bending near a Tiffany, explaining its merits to three ladies. I inspected a Peace and a Pink Frost and by then Crowley had disengaged himself. "How do you think it's going?" he asked expectantly. "Splendidly," I answered in truth. "I'm glad to hear you say it. I hope so. You know I hope my fellow merchants will join me in doing something to get the City and the University closer together. "The University of Miami spends about 50 million dollars a year in our area. We're foolish to let the retail trade part of it go to the shopping centers, which is where a lot of it's going because we are not doing all we can. "You know, the other day I counted 34 vacant stores on Ponce de Leon alone. I sometimes wonder if we know the value of what we've got here." SEES FRIENDS He interrupted to say hello to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kerdyk. From across the way at the bar I heard a middle-aged women saying, "Well, I'm certainly not afraid of work. I grew up on a farm." Mr. and Mrs. Robert Seipp moved away from the shade of an umbrella table toward a plant that looked like a Red Pinocchio. The waiter came around with another platter of Mrs. Edith Howell's canapes. Our host turned back to us. "So, as I was saying, if we can get more of a feeling here by such things as open air band concerts, for instance, I think we'll all be happy with the results." It was time to leave so I excused myself. "Don't forget to sign the guest book," Crowley called cheerily after me. I did and was number 299 to do so. —ROLFE NEILL.

Times Press Sold; May Go Overseas
The old Coral Gables Times rotary press will soon go on a safari that may take it eventually to one of the new nations of Africa. Built 53 years ago in 1908, the press has been sold for an undisclosed figure to Joseph Spinola, a printing machinery dealer, according to Al Harum. Harum, Gables attorney and former publisher of the Riviera Times, said last week that the approximately nine-ton press will be removed in a couple of weeks when the former Times building at Salzedo Street and Aragon Avenue is demolished. A new three-story office building is planned on the same spot. Spinola, according to Harum, is planning to transport the press to North Carolina for resale and reshipment along with other printing equipment. Three type and headsetting machines have already been removed from the former Times home. The Times offices were moved to 364 Sevilla Ave. May 4 and printing operations transferred to The Miami Herald. Harum said he purchased the old Goss rotary from the Fort Lauderdale News in 1945 and the press had come from the Daytona Beach Morning Record before that. In its heyday, 16 different publications were printed by the Times. Many high school and other papers were printed at one time or another on the old press. The largest single run was 130,000 copies of a special Sears and Roebuck circular which took 21⁄2 days to run, Harum said.
We Chip in $100 to Give Fido the Proper Sendoff
Fido, when he grows old and stiff, will be properly taken care of when he finally goes off to the kingdom of canine. The Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday approved a $100 a month donation to the Humane Society to take care of unwanted or dead pets and strays. A donation was skipped last year after Metro adopted its dog control ordinance and set up the Dade County Metro Animal Control Unit. But it was later learned that the County would only pick up animals in violation of its ordinance. The Humane Society continued to do its humanitarian work but has reportedly operated at considerable loss of money.
