Early Gables Days Harley Tackled Big Pines, Built a City -- This One

By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter He was just a farm boy, Harley Pittman was. And looking for a job in July, the 1920's. From Valdosta, Ga., he came to Miami on Saturday. Monday morning, he applied for a job with the Coral Gables Corporation. He got it. Wasn't much. Planting trees, about 10,000 of them. Mowing lawns on Corporation-built homes, fertilizing. Today, Pittman is director of Public Service. But he clearly remembers that day he began to build a city. MODEL T "Started out with a Model T Ford truck and three colored men," he recalled. "The place was grown heavy with timber. No streets, no sidewalks, no street lights. "And we started out digging holes ... planting trees ... and hauling water out to these trees. "We hauled it out in a truck with 60-gallon wooden barrels - took it out with a bucket and poured it on. "It was kind of a tough job," he said dryly. BIG PINES "This place was full of enormous pine trees," Pittman said, sweeping his arms in front of him in circular fashion. "And all day long, you could hear the sound of dynamite all around." Pittman said he was "sitting on top of the world." He was a young farm boy who made good. His sister would pack him his lunch, maybe ham, boloney, or just butter and jelly on bread with an apple for dessert. No traffic then. Not many airplanes winging over head. At noon, Pittman would gather with his workmen to eat in a silent world of looming pines. Pittman made $87.50 a week. He saved his money. He bought a new Model T Ford for about $800, a suit for $35 and went to square dances Saturday nights. Pittman, sitting behind his desk as director, will always remember the day he stood in front of a Corporation official and asked for a job. "He knew I was young ... and wasn't afraid of work. That's what I think he liked." HARLEY PITTMAN

'Journey's End' Adds Big Building Boost

"Journey's End," Arthur Vining Davis' new $245,000 three-story residence, was among the top permits issued last month and pushed building totals in Coral Gables well ahead of last year's six-month total. The home is on Old Cutler Ridge Road at 9555 and adjoins his present residence. The mid-year total for 1961 is $6,750,582, compared to $5,936,110 for the same period last year. June's total was a healthy $1,299,679, helped along also by a $320,000 three-story, 45-unit apartment by the Santana-Nervia Corp. at 6580 Santona St. The June 1960 total was $1,005,881. Totals do not include land values, only buildings. In all, 353 permits were issued, including 13 residential for $558,460; two apartments having 57 units, $376,000; 21 additions, $130,892, eight pools, $22,625; a medical clinic, $18,000; four alterations, $15,000; seawall, $12,000; storage shelter, $5,000; and 302 miscellaneous, $161,602.

TIMES By Robert S. Hurwitz

Interested in Art Discussion? One of the true joys of an appreciation or understanding of art lies in the discourse of its meaning, objectives, trends, faults and benefits - social talking by artists, teachers and people who care. Under no other name but people getting together over an expresso, cup of tea or low calorie brew, this writer is organizing a monthly get-together group of people and artists interested in good fun and art discussion. The requisite of attendance is desire. The qualifications, that you are a good listener, good talker or if you're like me just interested in some new faces to stare at. In other words you're looking at the invitation to make the scene right now. My main concern now is getting your pledge of interest. If this sounds good to you please write me a card, give me a call or flash me a sign. Write your name, address and phone number and we'll get you know when and where. Art in Florida needs a voice. Artists need a sounding board and art lovers need to exchange ideas and views. I suspect that a lot of people would like to have a better understanding of art. Their voice should be heard and their questions answered by people not books. It's fine that so many people are taking art courses now, it's even better that they are constantly being encouraged in the field of self expression. The same here, for those who don't paint but like to view art and talk about it--here's my opinion of an outlet for expression. We'll just all sit together and talk - if too many talk at once this writer might say something literate like, "Now, don't all talk at once." At the same time if the conversation gets dull, I might interject a daring subject like, "Do you think at age eight Picasso still has an active sex life?" Now you might imagine this public invitation will draw a large crowd - you're wrong. Cultural interest in art has not grown to that proportion yet. Fact is, we'll probably wind up with a couple of dozen of assorted humans. In addition to the voluntary, some special guests will be cajoled into participation. Serious moments will be plentiful, meeting new people will be encouraged, but most of all we're gonna' have fun - join us please and let me hear from you.
