Preachin' Comes Naturally to Hangers

By BECKY DOYLE-QUINN Times Reporter June 18 was a very special day for the Rev. Dr. John Howard Hanger — for several reasons. It was Father's Day, his 53rd birthday and the day he came to serve as pastor of the Coral Gables First Methodist Church. "It was the greatest gift I ever received in my lifetime, to become pastor of such a church." A native of Madison, Ind., and the son of a minister, Mr. Hanger came here from Jacksonville where he served for eight years as minister at Riverside Park Church. Prior to that he was minister at Park Temple in Fort Lauderdale. Mr. and Mrs. Hanger have four children, three of whom have chosen lives in connection with the ministry. Their two older daughters are married to Methodist ministers. Their son, John Howard Jr., will enter Emory Univeristy this fall in preparation for the ministry. The youngest member of the family, 13-year-old Genie, hasn't yet decided what she'll do. She will attend Ponce de Leon Junior High School this fall. In his exceptionally deep, smooth voice, Mr. Hanger says that he feels that the Jacksonville they found their fact that his children have chosen the ministry is the "greatest compliment they could give their parents and the home life they have enjoyed growing up in parsonage homes. "There is some general feeling that ministers' kids can often turn out bad, growing up under public scrutiny, but it is my contention, (and I think my point is demonstrated) that this need not be so." How does he like Coral Gables? "Most ideal. It's magnificent here, and I love it!" Mr. Hanger says that he and his family have received a friendly reception and that they are grateful for it. When they drove down from new home at 2901 Granada Blvd. empty, but the lights were on, food was in the refrigerator, flowers all around, and a prepared meal waiting for them. The Hangers' new home is provided by the congregation and is, Mr. Hanger says, the most lovely home they've ever lived in. The church's 3,700 members will find that their new pastor is well versed in civic affairs. In Jacksonville he served as president of the Ministerial Alliance, as a member of the executive committees of the YMCA and Youth Life Movement. He was also a trustee of the Kazanjian Economics Foundation which furthers economic education through the schools. He was appointed by Governor Collins as a member of the Teacher Education Advisory Council. L-R: Genie, Mrs. Hanger; Rev. Dr. Hanger; John Howard Hanger Jr.

First Unit For Gateway Church Set

A ground-breaking service for the erection of the first unit of the Gateway Chapel of the University Baptist Church will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. On a five-acre tract of land on S.W. 97th Ave. and 62-64 Streets, purchased in July of 1960, the permanent building will be constructed for the chapel. The plant includes a worship auditorium with a baptistry, seating 183 persons, and an educational unit, including separate areas for seven Sunday School departments, will seat 247 persons. The chapel was organized by the University Baptist Church in December, 1955, and met in the David Fairchild School until last October. The unavailability of property suitable for a church in the Fairchild School area resulted in the congregations' move to the 97th Avenue area.

HE'S NUTS

It is possible that I may be just a bit addled but I do know for a fact that the best advertising buy in all South (or North, too, but we don't care too much about that) Florida is the little one-dollar classified ad in the Times. This little demon is read by more than 100,000 people and I'll bet more than half of them want to buy what you have to sell. Call HI 3-1661 and try ... you'll see what I mean!
