Our Peace Corps Girl Says 'Nobody Can Criticize You For Teaching People to Read'
SUE HILLER By BECKY DOYLE-QUINN Sue Hiller is nervous now. But this time next week she'll probably be frantic. Sue, the 21 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Morton Hiller, 243 Valarde Ave., is one of two Dade Countians accepted by the Peace Corps to serve in the Phillipines. She will be on a 150-member team assigned to teach Filipinos in the jungles. She will leave July 29 for an eight week training course in "a very rugged, undeveloped part of Puerto Rico." After that she will be allowed to come home for two weeks and then will leave for the Philippines Nov. 1. Sue, a graduate of Coral Gables High School and Smith College in Northampton, Mass., hasn't as yet received all the information concerning her assignment. She took the Peace Corps test during school and received a telegram notifying her of her acceptance Friday. But that's all she's heard. Sue thinks the Peace Corps is "the best thing the government has come up with in a long time." The corps was first proposed by Kennedy during the Presidential campaign last year. "It is the perfect way to meet other countries on an equal footing. It will show them that we are sincere. Nobody can criticize us for trying to teach people to read." She will be teaching English, probably to children, as far as she knows. There will no doubt be some recreational work involved but she won't be working in the cane fields, unless they train her for that in Puerto Rico. "One of the things I'm nervous about is the training camp. Not everyone gets through it." Sue will be stationed in the islands for two years or possibly three. She is free to come home whenever she wishes but she fully intends to stay. The Peace Corps test was somewhat of a fad for a while, she says. Everyone was taking it. But Sue took it because it was what she wanted to do. "It's a wonderful opportunity. It'll also give me a chance to find out how I like teaching." This will not be the first time she has had contact with people from foreign countries. She studied in Mexico last summer. The summer of 1959 she worked in New York meeting and helping exchange students and their families. What will Sue receive in reward for her labors in the Philippines? Traveling expenses, room and board, and $75 for every month she is there, which she will receive when she comes back. "I guess they don't want us to have money to spend while we are there." Sue isn't sure just where she will be teaching. She assumes it will be in small towns and villages, "where other people don't want to go." She isn't too worried about the language problem. She has a fairly fluent knowledge of Spanish and can read French, so between the two she thinks she will be able to learn the Filipino dialect without too much trouble. Sue's parents are very pleased about it all even though they're a little worried about her being so far away for so long. "They're all for the Peace Corps - I think they'd really like to go themselves if they could." Sue's in a whirl trying to notify friends that "I won't be around for a while." Some of them applied, too, but "a lot of the boys I've dated don't believe it - they think it's all a joke." But Sue doesn't consider it a joke at all. She's not real sure just what she's in for, but she's looking forward to it.
Kingsley Honored For Work
Robert E. Kingsley, recent chairman of the Coral Gables People to People cultural exchange program, was cited by the City Commission recently for his work in connection with the program. Kingsley was replaced as president of the newly incorporated organization by Mrs. Lucile Neher in a recent election after the group received its state charter. The former chairman is public relations coordinator for International Petroleum Co., which has its offices in Coral Gables. Kingsley and Mayor Robert L. Searle were recently in Washington to receive an award in behalf of Warren Blackmon for his service to the program. Coral Gables' exchange city in the town affiliation program, started by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, is Cartagena, Colombia.

Fewer Buildings Cost More Than This Time Last Year
The number of new dwelling units added in the first six months of 1961 has dropped from the same period last year despite an increase in building totals. According to Miami Builders' Exchange, 80 new apartment units were started in the first six months of this year, compared to 102 for the same period last year. The number of single or two-family units also dropped from 86 to 68. At the same time, the building total increased from $5.9 million to $6.7 million. The difference was made up in non-residential, alterations, additions or miscellaneous construction.

City Joins Watchdogs
The City of Coral Gables has joined Mutual Fire Defense Institute - a watchdog group that sees the fire underwriters fulfill their responsibilities. MFDI seeks to make sure municipalities get a square deal on fire insurance rates set by the underwriters. It is an arm of the American Municipal Association. Rates are based on various criteria such as size of the fire fighting force, equipment, hydrants, types of dwelling and training level.
