Early Aviatrix Skirts Afly, 'Mumsky' Gets Ready for 82

THIS LADY will soon be 82, but she is bustling with energy. Getting across a point is Mrs. Irene Ozias. Her "buddy" is Peanuts. (Staff photo by Raymond Lang.) By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor It was easy for Irene (Mrs. John Howard) Ozias to fly by jet to Paris on one of the initial jet passenger planes. Mrs. Ozias knew all about flying. In 1935 she received her pilot's license in Honolulu. In August she will celebrate her 82nd birthday. But she exclaimed, of her jet [?]p, "We had hardly settled in our seats, when the pilot said, 'In five minutes we will be in Paris.'" Mrs. Ozias, her friends and family call her "Mumsky" resides at 4408 Palmarito St. She and her late husband, Dr. Ozias, bought the large rambling two-story house and all the ground around it in the early 1930's. She still owns through to Anderson Road, which she calls the jungle. Her home, however is never without guests, family and friends. With her is her daughter, Lusal Faul Ozias, office head of the Veterans Bureau at the University of Miami. Then her older daughter, Helen (Mrs. George A.) Saxton, a widow of Quakertown, Pa., spends the winter here. One of her three grandsons, [?] Bob Saxton, is presently on tour abroad with the Harvard Glee Club, as its physician. Her gold fish pool in the immense rectangular patio takes a lot of her attention. So does "Peanuts", her little brown dog. And as for the wild birds, they scold in the mornings, until Mumsky comes out with her bread crumbs to feed the [?]wd. Mrs. Ozias spent a year in Honolulu and took her lessons in flying there. She made air trips to Hong Kong and Tokyo. At her summer home in Quakertown, she was an active member of the Quakertown Woman's Club. When she visited Berlin, she was invited to speak before the Berlin Woman's Club. Her hobbies today include reading. "No more travel books for me," she will tell you. She reads biographies. She still drives her own car, and the other day, took a neighbor, who had been ill, to the beauty parlor.

We'll Join For Today

Coral Gables will join hands with Colombia, South America, today (Thursday) in celebrating its 151st anniversary of independence. Mayor Robert L. Searle, representatives of the Colombian consulate in Miami, Colombians living in the Miami area and University of Miami officials and Columbian students will join in a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Cartagena Plaza. The flag of Cartagena, Colombia, Coral Gables' sister city in the People to People cultural exchange program, will be flown. Specially made by Cartageneros, the flag was presented to the city last year.

No Building Near Bay?

A study of the feasibility of scenic roads along Coral Gables' undeveloped areas has been unanimously recommended by the Planning Advisory Board. The proposal to limit construction of buildings along the Gables' vanishing waterfront was made by member William L. Wood and approved by Mrs. S. M. Greene, Cliff Hendrick, Arthur C. Bivins, Gerard Pucci and C. J. Miller. Don Wessell was absent. Board members recommended that the city's soon to be hired planning consultants consider the study. Privately owned buildings would be prohibited between the road and the bay under the plan.
