Lief Erickson, 2107 Alhambra Cir., and Judith Ann Hasencamp, 1415 Alhambra Cir., have been awarded Baptist scholarships at Stetson University, beginning this fall term. Judy and Lief were both active in student government at Coral Gables High. ★ ★ ★ Officials from colleges and universities whose students are [tr]aining in the ROTC Summer [C]amp at Fort Benning, Ga., arrived at the post for a two-day visit with the cadets. Dr. Willis E. Smith, associate dean, School of Education, University of Miami, represented the UM. ★ ★ ★ William W. Hankins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wood E. Hankins, 912 Tangier, is one of the midshipmen at Corpus Christi, [T]ex., summer training session for Navy ROTC. When his course is over, he will fly to the Naval Amphibious Train-three weeks' training in amphibious warfare. ★ ★ ★ Midshipman Robert Sutton, son of Mrs. R. L. Sutton, 513 Esteban, is aboard the destoryer USS Waldron taking part in an annual summer training cruise in the Western Atlantic. ★ ★ ★ Three students from Coral Gables have been named to the spring quarter Dean's List, Emory University. They are Suzanne Davis, 915 Placetas Ave.; Anthony Frilingos, 536 Bird Rd.; and Joan Sanders, 1220 Cordova. ★ ★ ★ Mr. and Mrs. Montford C. [P]eterson of 6920 Talavera St. have returned home after an extended visit with their daughter and son-in-law and friends in Cleveland. ★ ★ ★ The Jules Dubois family is back at 936 S. Alhambra Cir. after several weeks in New York. Their daughter Lucy underwent successful surgery there. Mr. Dubois, Latin American correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, completed a book while in New York. It is an account of his impressions of the effect of Fidel Castro and his policies on other Latin countries. It is his third book. ★ ★ ★ It didn't take Mr. and Mrs. James W. Brooks, of Santa Ana, Calif., long to say hello to both sets of parents, who are longtime residents of Coral Gables. Catherine (Mrs. Brooks) is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Herndon, of 1215 Capri St. James is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Brooks, of 4545 Riviera Dr. With them are their three young daughters, Kathy Lynn, 7; Susie, 6; and Theresa, 21⁄2. Their grandmother Herndon says she is surrounded by those darlin' girls. Many old time friends of the Brooks' are planning parties during their month's visit. Brooks is with the Marines in California. ★ ★ ★ Ronnie Thagard didn't bat an eye, when the Admiral of the Fleet paused in front of the 6 foot-plus fireman aboard the U.S. Navy airplane carrier The Essex during final inspection and dismissal at Quonset Point, R.I. Ronnie and his twin Donnie (also aboard) are now home with their parents, the Wendell Thagards, 710 Madeira Ave. Seems the admiral paused when he came to Ronnie and said, "Where is your home?" "Coral Gables, sir," Ronnie replied. The Admiral smiled and said, "I've been there; it's a beautiful place." Then he said "Now that you have traveled far and visited many ports, where would you like to live?" "In Coral Gables, where I have always lived," replied Ronnie. ★ ★ ★ Mrs. Joseph Murphy, 701 Alcazar Ave., president of the Junior Women's Club of the Church of the Little Flower announces a card party scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 3, to be held in the church cafeteria. Reservations for the party may be made by calling Mrs. H. G. Brodeur, HI 8-2892. Proceeds will finance the nursery, directed by the club, and maintained for the use of parishioners during the Sunday masses.
