Chernow, 39; Was Broker In Miami
A Coral Gables resident and Miami mortgage broker shot himself through the head Saturday night with a pistol purchased only hours before from a Miami gun shop, Gables police said. Bernard Chernow, 39, died at Doctors' Hospital approximately two and one-half hours later. Services were held Monday. According to Officer Ralph Lichtenberger, he and Officer Charles Harris found Chernow lying in bed wounded, with a .20 caliber automatic beside him. Chernow had been under psychiatric care approximately four years ago, Lichtenberger said. When Chernow arrived home at 4 p.m., Lichtenberger said, he and Mrs. Chernow quarreled over tranquilizer pills. Chernow became enraged and tried to choke his wife. The two Chernow dogs jumped into the affray and Mrs. Chernow said she was bitten trying to protect her husband. Chernow returned later after purchasing the gun from a Tamiami Trail gun shop. Shortly after 9 p.m., Mrs. Chernow told police, she heard a shot as she was talking on the phone to Stanley Levitt, 100 SW 92nd Ave. Levitt called police.
