Why LeJeune or Bird? Street Names' Origin Are Mystery and History
By RAYMOND LANG Times Staffer A woman named Constance ... a man named Charles. Which one did it? A ticklish, little mystery has risen from the past. There's a road in Coral Gables over which thousands of motorists drive. But whom is it named after? Constance or Charles? You see, both their last names were Le Jeune. The Times came across the mystery as it set out to do a story on how Coral Gables' streets got their names. MEDITERRANEAN George Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables, was impressed with the beauty of countries on the Mediterranean Sea. So he patterned the Gables after Mediterranean style, with Spanish influence predominant - homes, fountains, gateways to the city, and the streets. All Gables streets are named after cities and heroes of Spain. But what of the road called LeJeune, a French name? Miss Loretta V. Sheehy, city clerk since 1925, said: "They named LeJeune Road after Constance LeJeune. She owned so much property, so many groves, along there. She now lives in Paris." SHE SAYS NO But Mary Helm Clarke, a WONDERING how Gables streets got Spanish names, such as Almeria and Galiano, are Miguel, 4, and Maria, 3, Choca, 1107 Alhambra Cir. It's no mystery, as our story will point out. (Staff photo by Raymond Lang). Gableite who has done research on the city's history, said: "Le Jeune was named for a bachelor from Belgium who had a grove on LeJeune Road. "He built the road and as it was extended it was given his name." How other Gables streets got their names is no mystery at all. Miss Sheehy said Merrick's idea was "to make this a Latin town so it could be a link between South and North America. "Look at the foresight that boy had!" How about Riviera Drive? "We had 16 miles of navigable canal," Miss Sheehy said, "and he (Merrick) wanted the homes along there, like the Riviera in Europe." DOUGLAS And Douglas Road? Miss Clarke told it this way. "John Douglas was a pioneer," she said, "who cut that road from his place, which is where the entrance (Douglas Entrance) is now. "He cut that road from his house over to Coconut Grove - cut it with machetes. "The Grove was the only shopping center at that time," she explained. "And that was probably about 65 years ago." Red Road and Blue Road received their names because the lines on Merrick's original map representing those streets were that color, Miss Clarke said. NO STRAIGHT LINE Alhambra Circle? "The people who designed the city said there was no straight line in art and so they had to make some little wiggle and turn in every street. "Alhambra Circle is named for a very famous city (Alhambra in Spain) and they made the circle so it would not be a straight line," Miss Clarke said. Coral Way? George Merrick's home was called "Coral Gables." His roof was coral and it had gables. The road in front made "way" by this house. Coral Way! Granada Boulevard? ANOTHER CITY "Mr. Fink (Denman), who had drawn the plans for the city, Miss Clarke said, designed Granada Entrance (after Granada, a city in Spain). "So it was natural for the street coming through that gateway and through the town to be named 'Granada'." As for Bird Road? Well, another mystery. Miss Clarke is not sure, but she said Bird Road might be named after an old, prominent Gables family, the Preston B. Bird family. And so our streets bring to the city the flavor of Spain and a touch of mystery.
