Dr. Coleman Heads Dental Society Here
DR. COLEMAN DR. HASTY Dr. George J. Coleman, a Coral Gables dentist, was installed president of the East Coast District Dental Society at the summer meeting at the Jack Tar Grand Bahama Club, Grand Bahama Island. Dr. Clarence E. Gingras installed the officers for the year 1961-62. Dr. Frederick E. Hasty, Jr., of Coral Gables, is president-elect. Other officers are Dr. William O. Shumpert, 1st vice president; Dr. Robert Litowitz, 2nd vice-president; and Dr. Andrew A. Henry, secretary, treasurer. More than 200 dentists, wives and guests enjoyed the three day meeting which included business, social and recreational activities.
Our Fire Station's Got Everything--But a Sign
Coral Gables' new fire station is creating interest around the country. The July issue of Florida Firemen used a photograph of the $450,000 installation on its front cover. Fire Engineer magazine has asked for more information for use in a future issue and New York papers have shot the ultra-modern station inside out for pictorial presentation. Bert Burris, city and advertising consultant, has also sent information to Fire Station Digest and the NFPA Fireman. And an inquiry has also been received from Florida Builder. More than one visiting fireman from out of state has come to a screeching halt while going by the station, according to Chief Paul Matheson. One fireman from California thought he really had something back in the old home town until he saw the Gables' pride, said Matheson. One thing lacking is a sign to tell the people what it is, said the chief.
Local Accidents, Injuries Down So Far This Year
The Coral Gables traffic accident picture for the first six months of 1961 is brighter than ever. There have been fewer accident and injuries although the number of persons killed has remained the same. According to statistics compiled by the Police Department, there have been 289 injuries, and one death in 819 accidents through June. Over the same period last year there had been 869 accidents in which one person was killed and 305 injured. Another factor in the totals which emphasizes the trend toward safety is that all accidents, however minor, are now included. A sharp dropoff was reported for the month of June. There were 105 accidents in which 19 persons were injured. The same month last year 140 accidents were recorded in which one person was killed and 29 injured.
Boat House Acceptable Ideas Vary
The Planning Advisory Board and the Zoning Boards do not see eye to eye on the subject of boat houses. As the Planning Board sees it, boat houses should be allowed in all areas of Coral Gables providing they are confined within the setback limits of the residence and that square footage and land coverages for garages apply. The Zoning Board recommends that setbacks be the same as for residences, that safety requirements be the same as for pools (four-foot wall or fence), escape ladders be installed and eave lines not exceed eave lines of the main building. The City Commission will have to resolve the differences.
