by helen reynolds society editor Joan Halifax can create a beard that looks real enough to have come right out of one of Shakespeare's "who-done-it's" in fact, that's what she is doing presently as a summer student at the University of Miami. (Joan attends Newcomb College at Tulane University). Her professor at UM is Dr. Delman S. Solem, head of the Drama Department. He is also directing three Shakespearean plays "Midsummer Night's Dream," "King Richard the III" and "The Taming of the Shrew." Joan is a busy girl. To make a beard she says first you paint the actor's face with liquid adhesive, then cover it with spirit gum, then stick on the beard material. Trim beard, peel it off, and it's ready for that actor to don. JOAN Joan and her sister, Verona, are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. John Halifax, of 3501 Durango St. Eunice, their mother, says the girls amaze her. Verona is working in a local bank this summer. A year ago the family made their second trip abroad (the first was by trailer-camp) and the girls were invited for an interview over the BBC. They had been in London in 1957, when the first American Trailer Camp group went by trailer from all points of the United States, and ship, to foreign shores. However, the Halifax girls were accustomed to the trailer life. Every summer since they were tots, their parents have traveled (by trailer) all over the West, Southwest and Mexico. ★ ★ ★ Jackson Baldwin, 1340 Mendavia Ave., plans to catch up with his family this week, flying out to New Mexico to meet them. Seems Jackson, president of the Miami Rotary Club, wanted to wait until his final meeting in July, before he could take a vacation. His wife, Sue, and their three children, Susie, who graduated from Ponce de Leon Junior High in June; son, Jackson Reid Baldwin and the youngest, Bethany, drove out in the station wagon. Sue headed for California and so that the children could visit Disneyland. After Jack joins his family, they will tour the wide-open spaces for the next four weeks.

Notes and Quotes

By Madelene Hawkins Turnip Camellias, Carrott Chrysanthemums arranged on Banana or Heleconia leaves; these are vegetable flowers for a centerpiece. They are fresh, cool and crisp and also good to eat. With just about everyone going off to the far corners of the globe those left in Dade County feel mighty sorry for themselves and what better diversion than exotic and unusual foods. It will be quite a challenge for Mrs. H. W. Gibson to be president of Palmetto Garden Club, she is surrounded with doing and growing gardeners. Mrs. Emil J. Gould of Banyan with four children in tow to see the sights from the artic circle to the Italian boot. Mrs. J. R. Bradley new president of Shenandoah will be traveling most every garden club meeting, she lives in Kendall area and most members are Gabelites or Southwest Miami residents. Mrs. M. S. Farrar, Andalusia Ave. is one who has not deserted us as yet, but will be spending the summer dreaming up new ideas for her flower arrangement class and programs given at the Coral Gables Country Club and other interested groups. Her Christmas arrangements are always very interpretive and have that gay holiday flair. Corsage shows are coming into their own and we say at long last. What a joy, just to take along a little shoe box with a floral offering to the judges instead of having to tote a great big carton and a carload of other paraphernalia. Sand and Seed Garden Club staged one recently. Instructor was Mrs. A. M. MacAleese. Interesting title too; "Around the Clock," depicting the hours and activities of the day. Now for making vegetable flowers for a patio or a brunch affair. You will need a sharp 8-inch French knife, an ordinary potato peeler with a scalloped edge and plenty of toothpicks to hold the pieces together. Use the largest carrots, the biggest turnips available in your market; and let them wilt a little before you start carving. You can crisp them in ice water after they are assembled into the flowers that you have created. Peel the vegetables. Cut thin slices and graceful curves, improvise any flower shape you wish, also any color with a dip in food colors.
