We Get Year's Reprieve On Move to Cost $350,000
Coral Gables has been given a year's reprieve in merging its budget year with Metropolitan Dade County and using the county's tax roll - a move that would cost taxpayers an estimated $350,000 to accomplish. The Metro Commission approved a requested delay on both after Finance Director Kenneth Allyn appeared before them. The Gables will not have to adopt a 15-month budget until 1963-64 fiscal year. The same would apply on the use of the county tax roll. Allyn asked the Metro Commission if they would reconsider changing the Metropolitan Home Rule Charter to allow the cities' their own fiscal year setup. The Commission indicated a study would be made to determine the feasibility of Allyn's request. Adopting a 15-month budget would cost the taxpayers an estimated $350,000, Allyn pointed out, because the taxes would be paid three months in advance and there would never be any catching up. Some communities, with different tax years, set up shorter budgets to merge with Metro and saved the taxpayers money, Allyn said.
Budget OK Must Come By Aug. 1
The Coral Gables City Commission has a must on its things to do at the Aug. 1 meeting - adopt the estimated $5.3 million budget. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. is scheduled to present the appropriations ordinance on the budget July 25. Dozens of meetings have been held by Commissioners with department heads and members of various boards in recent weeks. A 19-mill tax rate was presented in the proposed budget, but this could change by the Aug. 1 deadline.
