High Taxes Here to Stay, Fascell Says

The frustrations and joys of being their Congressman were told 87 Coral Gables business people Tuesday morning by Rep. Dante Fascell. He spoke at the second monthly coffee session of the chamber, held at Coral Way Cafeteria. Just back from one of Washington's longest Congressional sessions, the seven-year representative said: "There's been a lot of action and a lot of discussion. I wouldn't want to draw an absolute judgment on this Congress or others." As for the some 100,000 communications he receives yearly from his one million Dade County constituents: "I don't think any two people in this county think alike!" Dressed in a dark blue suit and frequently fingering a slender gold pencil as he spoke, Fascell offered these other opinions in his 25-minute talk: MILITARY SPENDING - "If there's any doubt about our security, Congress will give too much money. We'll take a close look at the request but we'll grant it." OVER - SPENDING BUDGET - "People ask, 'can't anybody plan better than that?' The answer is 'no.' It's that simple. I think it's amazing we do as well as we do. It is a tremendous problem. Budget preparation starts 18 months in advance." WASHINGTON - "There's a new spirit in Washington, new drive and enthusiasm. The lights are burning late. Things are being done. An example is the mutual security bill which was completely rewritten." COMMUNIST PRESSURE - "During the last election, the Reds apparently decided to put a full-court press (an aggressive basketball action) on Uncle Sam . . . I think we're all waiting for the time when we can get on top and drive the car a little bit and have the Reds reacting to us." SOUTH AMERICA - "It's a propaganda race all the way . . . I feel like a preacher I've said it, so much but we're sitting on a volcano down there. Cuba is just a symptom." TAXES - "Yes, we have a high tax burden and it looks like we're going to stay on that plateau for some time to come, although we're not the highest taxed country in the world. I don't think people mind paying if they know they're getting their dollar's worth." Fascell's law partner, Dave Hendrick, died over the weekend. Fascell said he kept the speaking engagement the morning of Hendrick's funeral because "Dave would have wanted me to. He was one of the most conscientious people I ever met in my life." Chamber president Hamilton Hayes led a standing, silent tribute to Hendrick, who was buried later that morning. This month's coffee was sponsored by Daniels Department Store. Their door prizes were won by Bill Kerdyk, Rolfe Neill and Buck Neuberger. THAT LOOK OF joy on Bill Kerdyk's face came Tuesday morning when he won one of the door prizes at the Chamber of Commerce coffee. He's holding in his hand the winning number.
