David H. Hendrick Jr., 47; Was a Former Mayor
David H. Hendrick Jr., commissioner and mayor during the hectic post-World War II period, was buried at Flagler Memorial Park Tuesday following services at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Mr. Hendrick died Sunday a [?] emergency surgery at Doctors' Hospital Oct. 7. He was 47. "He was one of the finest mayors we ever had," said Miss Loretta Sheehy, city clerk and a long-time City employe who worked many years with Mr. Hendrick. The attorney and finance executive had been ill for several months following surgery, complications and other ailments that dogged him in efforts to regain his health. Mr. Hendrick, a native of Orlando, came here in 1933. He was a graduate of the University of Miami and University of Miami Law School and set up practice in 1938. He was in partnership with the law firm of Turner, Hendrick, F cell and Guilford. During World War II, Mr. Hendrick was an instructor in the Navy at Miami Beach the rank of lieutenant. Following the war in 1947 he served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, president of the Rotary Club in 1957-58, and president of the Chamber of Commerce 1958-59. He was also a member o the Coral Gables American Legion Post and worked for Red Cross and the March of Dimes. He was elected to the Coral Gables City Commission in 1947 for a four-year term. In 1951 he was elected mayor and re-elected mayor in 1953. He served eight years on the Commission. Among the many honors accorded Mr. Hendrick was the Good Government Award of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce in 1955 and in 1959 the Award of Merit for Outstanding Civic Service by the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Hendrick was a vestryman in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a founder and charter member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Hendrick; a daughter, Bunny; a son, David; a sister, Virginia; and two brothers, Cliff and Bill. His mother died recently. Harry Oltz, 72, Ice Cream King
Funeral for Harry M. Oltz, 72, founder of the Dairy Queen ice cream store chain, was held Wednesday. Mr. Oltz, who lived at 1112 Alfonso Ave., died Monday. He came here from Hammond, Ind., in the mid-1930's to start one of the largest ice cream store chains in the country. As a boy, he learned the business cleaning ice cream freezers in a plant. Mr. Oltz, a native of Kansas City, Mo., also founded Ar-Tik Systems Inc. to sell ice cream franchises throughout the country. He is survived by his wife, Sarah M.; two sons, Harold F. and Roger D.; one sister; and seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Buggeln, Ad Exec's Wife
Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at The Church of the Little Flower for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Buggeln, 55, 1515 Sarria Ave., who died Tuesday. A native of Elmhurst, Long Island, N.Y., Mrs. Buggeln came here in 1952 from New York City with her husband, Robert. He formerly was Miami News advertising director and is now executive vice president of the Erwin Harris Advertising Co. She was a member of the Riviera Country Club, the Coral Gables Country Club and held memberships in the Women's Golf Association of the Riviera and Coral Gables Country clubs and the Greater Miami Woman's Golf Association. She leaves her husband; one daughter, Linda Ann; and a sister, Mrs. Rita McCluskey of Huntington, L.I.
Albert Thomas, 83, CG Builder
Services for Coral Gables builder Albert G. Thomas, 83, 1530 Placentia Ave., who died Oct. 11, were held Friday afternoon at Van Orsdel Coral Gables Chapel. Burial followed at Flagler Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Thomas came here 19 years ago from Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Masons. Surviving are his wife, Amelia; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Kendrick, both of Coral Gables; a brother, Arthur, of Pittsburgh; a sister, Mrs. Mollie Hunter, of Washington, D.C.; and one grandson and two great granddaughters.
Barry Yanks Bar Mitzvah
Barry Yanks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Yanks, 920 Messina Ave., will be Bar Mitzvah Saturday at Temple Zamora. Rabbi B. Leon Hurwitz will officiate. Barry is an eighth grader at Ponce de Leon Junior High School where he is captain of the intramural football team.
Robert Shubow Bar Mitzvah
Robert Shubow, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Shubow, 5040 Riviera Dr., will be Bar Mitzvah at the 10:30 a.m. service Saturday at Temple Judea. Rabbi Mordecai Podet and Cantor William Royal will officiate. Mr. and Mrs. Shubow will be the hosts at the Kiddush following the service.
Gertrude Russell Music Minister
Riviera Presbyterian, 5275 Sunset Drive, has appointed Mrs. Gertrude Russell as minister of music. Mrs. Russell graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory College of Music.
