CG Lions Dine, Dance With Kabers

Mr. and Mrs. Bent H. Kaber were hosts for 38 members of the Coral Gables Lions Auxiliary and their husbands at a cocktail and dinner party at their home 701 Coronado Ave., Saturday evening. Mrs. Kaber is chairman of the social committee. Assisting her were Dr. and Mrs. B. E. Smiers, Mrs. C. E. Huskamp in charge, Mrs. William Ussery and Mrs. William Charlton. Dinner was served on the dlelit patio followed by dancing. Entertainment included "Dance of the Waving Cane" by C. Dana Woodman.

The United Fund drive cannot be conducted in Coral Gables in December — unless the countywide drive is held on a December day. That was the ruling of the City Commission Tuesday. December is traditionally a no-drive month in Coral Gables.

Officials of the Coral Ridge Properties, Inc., Ft. Lauderdale appointed Albert E. Metzger, 6825 Tordera St., as president of the firm's First Financial Corporation, a company chartered by the government to do business under the Small Business and Investment Act. The Metzgers who have four daughters, Laura Lyn, Wendy Lee, Mary Piel and Abigail, plan to move to Lauderdale in the near future. A resident of Coral Gables since 1955, Metzger has been a vice-president and cashier of the First National Bank here. He came here from Indianapolis. ★ ★ ★ Mrs. Eleanor Walsh, Art teacher at the University of Miami, is teaching a combined English and Spanish class at the Church of the Little Flower. Sponsored by the Little Flower Society, the classes meet every Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. in the (old) church now used for meetings. ★ ★ ★ Variety Club women's committee, announces its annual fall bruncheon for Wednesday, Oct. 25 at the Deauville Hotel. Witches and goblins will set the stage for a series of lampoons and skits written and directed by Pat Bromberg, chairman, including a hat show. Variety Children's Hospital is one of the beneficiaries. ★ ★ ★ The Soroptimists Club of Coral Gables, which fell heir to a $1,000 gift through the will of member Mrs. Louise Schneider, voted unanimously to use the legacy as a beginning to establish a home for retired Soroptimists. ★ ★ ★ James Wright Crabtree, and S. Duffield Hopkins III, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. Duffield Hopkins, Jr., 1403 N. Greenway Dr., had dinner last Saturday night with their mothers at Gainesville. Both boys are freshmen at the University of Florida. Mrs. Crabtree, 2421 San Domingo St., whose husband is principal of Redland Junior High School, had been attending a teachers' conference at Tallahassee. She stopped by enroute home to visit their son. Mrs. Hopkins was visiting "Hoppy." It was quite by chance that they met at the Inn. James, majoring in pre-law has pledged Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. ★ ★ ★ Rabbi Mordecai Podet, spiritual leader at Temple Judea and a Lieutenant Commander (ret.) of the Navy has been appointed Jewish chaplain of the U.S. Naval Air Station, Key West; also Boca Chica Naval Air Station and of the Air Command, Miami International Airport. ★ ★ ★ If you are a lover of cats, you'll be observing International Cat Week, Nov. 5-11 says the American Feline Society Inc., a non-commercial organization now in its 23rd year of helping the kitty. ★ ★ ★ Were you, or your parents in Miami in 1903? If so, you are eligible to join the Miami Pioneer's Descendant's Club, meeting at 8 p.m. Monday at the home of Mrs. Marjory Blanton, 240 San Sebastian Ave. Mrs. Fred A. Kent who wrote (and published) the history of Plymouth Congregational Church, will tell the story. ★ ★ ★ Colorful Episcopalian priest, Father Liebler, who lives and works with the Indians at Bluff, Utah, is visiting his wife, Frances, at their home, 4521 SW 62nd Ct. Their three sons, and their families will also join in welcoming Fr. Liebler. They are Dr. John B. Liebler, 1511 Cantoria Ave.; Dr. Robert Liebler, a bachelor who lives with his mother, and George Liebler, manager of FPL's power plant at Port Everglades.
